Course Description:

The Skill Sets in this course will introduce students to the heating and air conditioning systems of the automobile. Areas of study include diagnosis and repair of A/C systems, refrigeration system component diagnosis and repair, diagnosis and repair of heating and engine cooling systems, operating systems and related controls diagnosis and repair, refrigerant recovery, and recycling and handling. Students will comply with personal and environmental safety practices associated with the handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals in accordance with local, state, and federal safety regulations.This course is recommended as an Elective in Automotive Technology.

  • test the performance of an A/C system and determine needed repairs.
  • perform leak test A/C system and determine needed repairs.
  • inspect the condition of discharged oil, select oil type, measure and add oil to the A/C system as needed.
  • diagnose A/C system problems that cause the protection devices (pressure, thermal, and PCM) to interrupt system operations and determine needed repairs.
  • inspect A/C compressor drive belts, replace and adjust as needed.
  • inspect, test, and replace A/C compressor clutch components or assembly.
  • remove and replace A/C compressor and mountings.
  • inspect and replace A/C compressor shaft seal assembly.
  • diagnose A/C system problems caused by too much moisture in the refrigerant.
  • install A/C system filter, remove and inspect A/C system mufflers, hoses, lines, fittings, 0-rings, seals, and service valves, and replace as needed.

  • perform cooling system, cap, and recovery system tests (pressure, combustion leakage, and temperature) and determine needed repairs.
  • inspect engine cooling and heater system hoses and belts; replace as needed.
  • inspect, test, and replace thermostat and housing.
  • determine coolant condition; drain, and recover.
  • flush system and refill with recommended coolant and bleed system.
  • inspect, clean and test fan, fan clutch (electrical and mechanical), fan shroud, and air dams; replace as needed.
  • inspect and test heater control valve(s) and replace as needed.
  • diagnose failures in the electrical controls of heating and A/C systems and determine needed repairs.
  • inspect and test A/C - heater blower, motors, resistors, switches, relays, wiring, and protection devices and repair or replace as needed.
  • test electricial circuits or components for continuity using electrical test equipment.
  • inspect and test systems to verify system compliance with plans and specifications or to detect and locate malfunctions.
