From the Principal’s Desk…
Thank you,LACES staff, faculty and parents for your continued support and enthusiasm to provide only the best educational program and opportunities for success to all students in a safe and nurturing, yet academically challenging environment at LACES!Our students have been very busy for the past few months demonstrating excellence in so many areas:
LACES Academic Decathlon team(Coach Rusin) placed second in our conference with thousands of points higher than past years; LACES Mock Trial high school team(Coach Robinson, Attorney Coaches Mrs. Korn and Mrs. Cooper) placed in the top ten schools in the city’ LACES Mock Trial middle school teamalso performed superbly with special recognition for Gabe Grossman as the Outstanding Defense Attorney and Keren Yi as the Courtroom Journalist (first place); Sixth grade Spelling Beewas great! Brad Lee is the LACES and Local District 3 winner and will participate in the County Spelling Bee on March 18; LACES Science Bowl middle schoolteams (Coach Schlum) did very well with one team placing third in the competition; LACES MESA middle school teams (Coach Selig) had a huge success at the preliminary rounds and two teams will move onto the regional MESA competition; LACES Cheerleaders brought home second place trophyand a showmanship trophy;Boys’ Basketball (Coach Baskerville) team is this year’s CIF City Championsfor our division!; Academic Pentathlon teams (Coach Robinson) have been diligently preparing for the competition - March 21. We look forward to an excellent outcome.
Students’ academic achievements for the fall semester have been recognized as follows: Principals’ Honor Roll (GPA 4.0 and up), LACES Honor Roll (GPA 3.5 – 3.99), Citizenship Award (All E’s). We have added three additional categories for recognition: Academic Achievement (GPA 3.0 – 3.49), Perfect Attendance, and Counselors’ Award for Academic Progress per recommendation from parents of BPO, teachers and counselors.
Special thanks to:Ms. Henry and the entire Resource Coordinating Council team for organizing outstanding Positive
Behavior Support Plan and promoting the U-House Way (Respect, Responsibility and Readiness) at LACES.
Ms. Henry, Ms. Hwang and the STEP teachers as well as Ms. London, Ms. Bakewell and Abhi Amarnani (12th grade) and the National Honor Society members for providing excellent academic support for challenged students. Mr. Vriesman and the math department for the math support through afterschool math study groups. Dr. draper and Mrs. Rusin for the excellent operation of the WritingCenter. Mrs. Costanzo for the 6th grade literacy support. Mr. Rasiej for his generous donation of $5,000 to supplement funding for the math study groups. Ms. London and HR Leaders for their nurturing support for 6th and 7th grade students. FOL for their continuing efforts to provide funds for the school through various fundraising programs, especially for the recent fundraiser to supplement technology upgrade and funding schoolwide assemblies including the House of Blues performances. KPO for the technology fundraiser and culturally enriching assembly on the Lunar New Year’s Day. BPO for the Pancake Breakfast fundraiser and excellent academic recognition event. LPO and Ms. London for creating the “Go-To List” to improve communication among the stakeholders.
Our wonderful counseling staff will be meeting with grade-level parents from April 13th through April 29th to discuss specific needs and programs for scheduling classes for Fall 2009 as follows:

10th graders
All 10th graders should plan to take the following tests:
1)The California High School Exit Exam will be administered at LACES to all 10th grade
students on Tuesday, March 17, 2009 (English Language Arts) and Wednesday, March 18, 2009 (Math). Passing this exam is a requirement for an LAUSD high school diploma
2) The World History SAT Subject Test on June 6, 2009
Register for the World History Subject Test online at
11th graders
All 11th graders should plan to take the following tests:
(Fee waivers available to students on the free/reduced lunch program)
Every Junior needs to take the SAT Reasoning or ACT with Writing, and at least two SAT II Subject tests.
I have listed below the upcoming test dates and websites.
March 14, 2009 – SAT Reasoning
April 4, 2009 – ACT with Writing
*May 2, 2009 – SAT Reasoning or SAT Subject Tests
*June 6, 2009 – SAT Reasoning or SAT Subject Tests
*Please note that students should take Math Level 2 if planning to take the Math Subject Test!
  • I am currently meeting with Juniors and parents discussing college admissions and eligibility. Please contact Ms. Bakewell if you would like to schedule an appointment. Appointments can be scheduled until April 17, 2009. Please call or contact Ms. Bakewell, College Counselor via e-mail to schedule an appointment.
12th graders
The deadline for the FAFSA and the Cal Grant is March 2, 2009.
  • The Cal Grant GPA verification form was passed out to each Senior by Ms. Bakewell so please mail in by March 2, 2009.

Advanced Placement Exam Schedule 2009

Regular Cost for each AP exam - $86.00 per exam
Fee Waiver (free or reduced lunch) pay - $13.00 per exam
Student must have a completed lunch application verifying eligibility for a fee waiver!
AP Registration Forms for students will be passed out on Monday February 9, 2009 in the homerooms. Deadline for ordering AP exams is March 15th!
