SOUTH HIGH SPARTANS

Band Boosters 2015-2016

Welcome back to all returning members and a big welcome to all our new members. This letter will outline the cost to participate in the South High Spartan Band and Colorguard program.

The Boosters is a non-profit parent group that supports the South High Band and Colorguard program in two major ways: volunteering and financial support. As with most high schools today, the majority of the funds needed to supply our students with uniforms, instruments, and supplies is not provided by the school district, but is the responsibility of the participants.

PROGRAM FEES: The actual cost of the band program throughout the year comes to approximately $800 per student. The booster organization sponsors fundraisers throughout the year to help lower the actual out-of-pocket expense for each family. It is imperative that all students participate in the fundraisers in order to cover our extensive costs. See Progam Fees for more details. Apart from the fundraisers, it is necessary to collect a participation fee from all students participating in band and colorguard.

The 2015-2016 South High Band and Colorguard Program fee is $525 per student. It is due on or before August 17, 2014. Please fill out and print the attached form and mail it to SHS Band Boosters, P.O. Box 1244, Torrance, CA 90505

ONLINE REGISTRATION AND UNIFORM ORDERING: Instead of mailing a large packet of papers to fill out, we have decided to initiate an online registration program this year. You will find the necessary forms at:

MANDATORY BAND CAMP: August 17 – September 2, Monday - Friday 3:00 pm – 9:00 pm. All students are required to attend. Only those students who fully participate in Band Camp are guaranteed a spot in our competitive show.

During second semester students may elect to participate in Drumline or Winter Colorguard which will require a separate fee for uniforms, coaches and competition fees. Drumline and Winter Colorguard auditions will be held in the winter and further information will be provided at that time.

We are looking forward to another fantastic year of Field Show Competitions, Drumline/Concert Percussion Competitions, Concert Season, Colorguard and Jazz Band Performances, enriching each of our students’ high school experience.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Band Boosters 2014-2015 Program Fees

In order to (1) allow students to participate in all the various musical programs at South, (2) make it economical for parents, and (3) allow the program to strive for EXCELLENCE, the South High Band Boosters has for many years structured the program fees so everyone can benefit. The fees required for the band program can be separated into three different categories. Then there are the fees required by the School.

Below is a breakdown of the entire program (Booster and School) for your reference.

If you have any questions regarding the program fees, please do not hesitate to contact

Donna Dean (310) 621-0282 or via email at .

Band Program Fees

Number One: Membership Fees. (Mandatory) The Boosters assess fees upon the members to defray the cost of uniforms, instruments, competitions fees and coaches. These fees are currently $525. All marching band students will be required to purchase marching shoes and first time students will also need to purchase a jacket. These payments will be due on or before August 17. This fee will cover a student who is performing with Marching Band, Concert Band, Colorguard and Jazz Band. There is a separate fee for performing with Drumline/Concert Percussion and Winter Colorguard, which is determined after the final audition and will cover uniform, competition fees and coaches' fees. If your student is ONLY in Jazz band or Concert, he or she will be required to pay a fee of $100.00 to cover the cost of competition fees.

The fee includes your $75.00 booster membership, $175 uniform fee, $225 field show fee. Not included in the fee are the Dickie band jacket, required for all band students who do not already own one, and marching shoes. There will be a separate order form for the shoes which will be sent home at a later date. The cost for the shoes will be approximately $40.

Number Two: Fundraising. (Mandatory) Several carefully chosen opportunities are lined up for your student to raise funds for the band program. Many of the fundraisers allow the students to apportion 50% of the profits directly into their student accounts to be used toward trip fees, banquet and even membership fees. This year each event will have an option to ‘buy-out’.

Number Three: Electronic “eScrip”. Vons/Pavilions “eScrip” and Ralph’s electronic Scrip are painless. Just sign up your club card through our website http://southhighband.org/ and http://www.escrip.com. This is a really good way to involve friends, family and neighbors. Just have them register their card and then every time they shop, our booster organization earns money.

Number Four: “Matching Funds Programs”: See following page

South High - Transportation Fee

South High School requires a ‘transportation fee’ for all sports and club participants that will travel for any functions. This is a separate fee, and not part of the Booster fee. This fee and the medical clearance form are MANDATORY for participation in the band program. Make checks out to South High School. This should be sent to you in the mail with your registration packet. If they are not included, you can download them from the SHS website: http://www.shs.tusd.org. It is due in August during registration.

DOUBLE YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS TO SOUTH HIGH BAND WITH MATCHING FUNDS PROGRAMS

South High Spartan Band Boosters is an educational 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and meets federal eligibility for matching funds programs, so you can double (or even triple) your contributions to the South High Spartan Band, including your band program fees.

Basic information regarding matching funds programs is set forth below. If you have any questions regarding matching funds programs, please contact Donna Dean at (310) 621-0282.

1. What is a Matching Funds Program?

Many companies allow their employees to direct their charitable giving programs through matching gifts. When an employee notifies the company that he/she has made a contribution to a non-profit organization such as the South High Spartan Band Boosters, the company will make a gift of the same amount, and in some cases double the amount, to the same non-profit organization. Your contributions made through our fundraising events (including your band program fees) can be used as a valid charitable gift for a matching funds program.

2. How does a Matching Funds Program Work?

It is extremely easy. Gift matching procedures can vary from company to company. The following example is typical:

1. An employee/retiree gets a matching gift form from the employer, usually from the human resource department or company website.

2. After completing the form, the employee/retiree sends it, along with the donation to the non-profit organization.

3. The non-profit organization certifies on the form that it has received the gift and meets the company’s guidelines for receiving a matching gift.

4. The non-profit organization returns the form to the company.

5. The company verifies eligibility of the employees/retirees and the non-profit recipient and sends the check to the non-profit organization.
