JIG SAW EXERCISE:

To Kill A Mockingbird Patchwork Quilt

A Visual Representation of Literary Elements

You will look at an event in To Kill a Mockingbird through the lens of each of the literary elements.

You will be assigned a group by number (1-7). Each group will address ONE of the following:

EVENTS

  1. Scout’s First Day of School
  2. Touching Boo Radley’s House
  3. The Snowstorm
  4. Miss Maudie’sHouse Fire
  5. Atticus and the Mad Dog
  6. Christmas at Finch’s Landing
  7. Mrs. Dubose

The first thing you should do, in preparation for tomorrow’s class, is RE-READ the chapter in which your incident occurs.

Then, you will meet with your group. Once your group has reviewed the EVENT itself, reach for the deeper meaning of this occurrence. Why did Harper Lee include this event? What does it do for us as readers with regard to the basic elements of literary analysis?Refer to the organizer (attached) for questioning guides.

From your graphic organizer notes, your group discussion, and your reading, you will create a series of patches that is both decorative in pattern and insightful in analysis.

Your group will make 6 patches (4 inches by 4 inches), one for each of the elements listed below. ONE PERSON WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR TWO PATCHES; SUPPORT EACH OTHER, BUT EVERYONE MUST CONTRIBUTE HIS/HER OWN WORK!

Setting (Social Context) How does the time and place uniquely affect the action of the story? The characterization? The style or language? Could the same story be told the same way in a different time and place? / CONFLICT/PLOT
Conflict / Plot What is the problem with regard to this event? How does it fit with other events? Why do you think the author included it?
POINT-OF-VIEW
Point-of-View From what point of view is the story told? How does this affect the reader's understanding of the story? How would the story be different if it were told from a completely different point of view? / THEME
