Leanne Lieberman will be speaking about her new novel, The Book of Trees. Set in Jerusalem, the book is about a Jewish teenager, Mia, who spends the summer at a yeshiva or seminary. When Mia unexpectedly learns about the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands, she starts to question her Zionist aspirations. Leanne's talk will focus on the way trees have been used in Israel to uproot one group of people and plant another, and how trees have become a vehicle for creating nationalist identities for both Jews and Palestinians.

Deep/Quest 2 Expeditions has grown into an internationally-acclaimed, Canadian-led, underwater exploration and film documentation organization. Deep/Quest 2 founder Kenn Feigelman will talk about various Deep/Quest 2 projects including the first ever undersea research and eco-tour habitat, Sea Base 1, which will be placed off Ambergris Caye, Belize. Tuesday February 15 ~ Eating Right? Gender, Foodways and Canadian Children

This presentation will focus on School Meal Programs (SMPs) in Canada, in particular, why there is no federal funding for this program. Existing SMPs operate primarily through the use of volunteers and donations from corporations and vary considerably from school board to school board. Jillian will be talking about her research, a work in progress and would like feedback on these programs.

The federal government's plan to close Canada's six prison farms motivated hundreds of Kingston area residents into action -- writing letters, signing petitions, organizing and attending public meetings and rallies, presenting briefs to a Parliamentary Committee and, attempting to blockade enormous cattle trucks, which led to the arrest of 24 people. Hear about the campaign and the lessons learned.

The reproductive lives of both Aryan and non-Aryan women and men were targeted by the Nazis through a series of medical, judicial, political and social pressures. German/Aryan women were encouraged or coerced into having children in ways that even challenged societal norms regarding marriage. In contrast, extreme restrictions were imposed on the reproductive lives of Jews, ranging from forced abortion, sterilization, infanticide and murder.
