ASSOCIATE DEAN/ ATHLETIC DIRECTOR, Kinesiology, Recreation, & Athletics

DEFINITION

Under general direction, is responsible to plan, organize, and supervise the intercollegiate athletic program and its curriculum; oversee the functions and activities of the Health and Physical Education Department; and value and promote the mission and vision of the college.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is an academic administrative position. An incumbent in this position will report to the dean of academic affairs. He/she will independently perform professional work involving judgment in the interpretation and application of policy and procedures. Incumbents have a high frequency of responsible contact with administrative and professional staff, students, and public/private agencies requiring tact and good communication skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Develops, directs, and supervises the men’s and women’s intercollegiate athletic program including scheduling, staffing, budget development and oversight, game management, and other related duties.
  2. Assumes responsibility for the program’s compliance with Title IX objectives.
  3. Conducts regular meetings and training to promote strict adherence among personnel and student athletes to conference and state athletic rules, regulations, and codes.
  4. Represents the college at conferences and state athletic meetings and to the community, other schools, and organizations regarding the athletic program.
  5. Supervises and evaluates assigned area employees.
  6. Works closely with the dean and Allan Hancock College Foundation to coordinate fundraising efforts.
  7. Provides leadership to the Student Athlete Retention Program and other such programs that promote academic achievement and transfer of student athletes.
  8. Develops an annual budget and monitors expenditures in a fiscally responsible manner.
  9. Provides support to eligibility clerk in determining eligibility of athletes.
  10. Participates in the selection and assignment of all coaches.
  11. Conducts regular program review and evaluation.
  12. Coordinates the use, maintenance, and security of equipment and facilities.
  13. Develops and implements an effective marketing and promotional program.
  14. Serves as college liaison to the booster club.
  15. Coordinates all home athletic events including the preparation of facilities, equipment, officials, and game personnel.
  16. In cooperation with the dean and department chair, assists in developing class schedules and teaching assignments and creating the budget and supervising expenditures.
  17. Provides leadership toward a dynamic curriculum through the planning, development, and implementation, and evaluation of instructional courses and programs.
  18. Participates in shared governance through service on college governance and other committees.
  19. Performs other related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • The rules and regulations of the intercollegiate sports offered by the college; knowledge of the rules and policies of the NCAA, NCIA, and COA which govern community college sports
  • General principles of organization, management and employee supervision, and training;
  • Effective research, analytical and report writing techniques

Demonstrated ability to:

  • Plan, organize, direct, and administer a program of intercollegiate athletics and an academic program including curriculum development;
  • Analyze, evaluate and recommend innovative changes to existing programs;
  • Direct the work of others;
  • Reconcile divergent views;
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with all segments of the college community general public.

Education and Experience:

Master's in physical education, education with an emphasis in physical education, kinesiology, physiology of exercise, or adaptive physical education; OR bachelor's in any of the above AND Master's in any life science, dance, physiology, health education, recreation administration, or physical therapy.

A minimum of five years successful experience as a head coach for a college team, or three years head coach for a college team, and at least one year as an assistant athletic director, and teaching in a community college.

Other Requirements:

A valid California driver’s license and ability to qualify for district vehicle insurance coverage.

Working Conditions:

  • May be required to work a flexible workweek which includes day and evening hours and occasional weekend assignments and may be assigned to any district location.
  • Duties are primarily performed in an office environment, at a desk or at a computer.
  • The incumbent will experience interruptions while performing normal duties during the regular workday.
  • The incumbent will have contact, in person or on the telephone, with executive, management, supervisory, academic and classified staff and the general public.
  • Work requires travel to other offices or locations to attend meetings or conduct work.

Physical Demands:

  • Typically may sit for extended periods of time.
  • Operates a computer
  • Communicates over the telephone and in person.
  • Regularly lifts, carries and/or moves objects weighing up to 10 pounds.
