There are two main YoungLivescommittee models - stand-alone and sub-committee. It is recommended that if Young Life is already operating in a community where YoungLives is starting, that the YoungLives committee and coordinator come under the leadership of the local area director and existing Young Life committee.

Stand-Alone Committee

In some areas, YoungLives has a committee that is committed to fund-raising the entire budget, as well as communicating regularly with donors, caring for mentors, assisting with recruiting childcareand other volunteers, arranging transportation for club, supporting the YoungLives coordinator, and representing YoungLives in the community. This kind of committee often operates in communities where Young Life is not present and/or where the coordinator is full-time. This model is more time-intensive for the coordinator, so a part-time coordinator may not have adequate time to form a stand-alone committee and plan fund-raisers along with recruiting and training mentors, doing contact work, planning club, etc.

Sub-Committee

In many other areas, YoungLivesoperates as a sub-committee (or working group) of the local Young Life committee. If the YoungLives budget is separate from the Young Life budget (there is one committee but two distinct area numbers), this sub-committee is responsible for the same kinds of the things that a stand-alone committee is responsible for – fund-raising (in partnership with the rest of the Young Life committee), communicating with donors, caring for mentors, assisting with childcare, etc. If the budgets are combined under one area number, the sub-committee is still expected to participate in fund-raising and other functions of the committee, but is focused specifically on helping with childcare, club, caring for mentors, and supporting the coordinator.

A sub-committee often operates in communities where Young Life is already established, there is an area director who is willing to train and mentor the YoungLives coordinator, and the YoungLives coordinator is volunteer or part-time.

There are many benefits to YoungLives being part of a Young Life area rather than being separate. Vision and goals can be set as a team, donors are approached by a unified ministry rather than separate programs, churches and other community programs are exposed to several different ways of partnering with Young Life, a trained and experienced area director can offer wisdom and connections to a new coordinator, YoungLives mentors are able to participate in Young Life leader training, teen moms can join in fall/winter camping with the area, Young Life Campaigner kids are welcomed to do childcare at YoungLives club, etc.

YoungLives Budgets
