POSITION DESCRIPTION

Title: Teacher Support / Reports to: Head of Learning Support

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

To support children’s learning at school, either as a group or on an individual basis as well asto provide additional part-time teaching hours as agreed from time to time

Student Support / Follow student support programmes as developed by the College
Support student inclusion in the classroom as necessary, including self-care, personal safety and, should the need arise, mobility and medication
Participate in the use of agreed and appropriate behaviour management strategies
Use age appropriate language and activities for students under your care
Provide appropriate feedback/reinforcement that is consistent and meaningful to the student and aligns with College policy and procedures
Implement activities as planned by the teacher
Perform tasks as outlined by the teacher and the Head of Learning Support
Teacher Support / Prepare classroom materials as directedduring non-teaching time
Provide teacher support for tests, including accurate marking and assessment
Provide support to the teacher both in the classroom and outside the classroom
Assist the teacher in preparing for lessons during non-teaching time
School Support / Provide support toschool functions as required
Be an active member of staff, participating enthusiastically in the administration of day to day school activities as required
Participate in relevant in-service training, staff and syndicate meetings
Classroom Teaching / Provide additional part-time teacher resource as agreed
Plan, prepare and teach lessons and activities for the year, based on children's needs and the curriculum
keep up to date with curriculum changes and assessment methods
assess and record learning and development of each child
help to develop children's social skills and behaviours
meet with parents, whānau and caregivers at planning or teacher/parent interviews as required
Health and Safety / Comply with the School’s health and safety policy and practices
Observe safe work practices in accordance with school policy, training and instruction
Identify, report, and, where appropriate, action risks/hazards in order to ensure the risk does not occur or recur
General / Consistently demonstrate the values of the School
Undertake other duties as determined by the Principal to meet school objectives and strategic goals

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Qualifications & Experience / Knowledge of working with and implementing programmes for students who have special needs
An understanding of the school curriculum and the area in which they work
An understanding of different teaching methods and learning styles
An understanding of child learning and development
Knowledge of safety and emergency procedures
First aid skills
Has a current teacher practicing certificate or limited authority to teach
