SHERMAN PIONEERS IN MICHIGAN: Newsletter #15 (June 18 2001) 1

Sherman Research Center & Archives, Alonzo Joseph Sherman, Curator, 308 West Dwight, Oscoda MI 48750, phone 989-739-3650, E-Mail <>.

NOTICE: This is the last year I will publish this newsletter. The December 2001 newsletter will be the last issue. Also the computer file called Sherman Pioneers In Michigan, is not going to be updated from this date forward. It is a decision based on the lower priority of this newsletter and this file, when compared against my personal family history files, and the lack of research time to accomplish both. The Sherman Research Center & Archives will still exist, but in a much less active manner. My personal family history files will be continued, which includes the Sherman Cemetery Project.

The yearly subscriptions will expire with the December 2001 issue. Refunds for the 5 years' subscriptions will be discussed with you individually: See the insert in this newsletter if you have a 5 years' subscription.

The newsletters and the Sherman Pioneers In Michigan computer file will continue to be shown on my web site < at least through the year 2002. But they will not be updated.

These newsletters have been published about twice a year since the first issue was published in June 1994. They deal primarily with Sherman Pioneers in Michigan, and their ancestors and descendants. Newsletters were priced at $6.00 a calendar year in USA; or $25.00 for 5 years. Copies of back years are $6.00 per individual year, or volumes 1-7 (June 1994 through September 1997) are available in a bound booklet, fully index for $15.00.

Sherman/Culhane/Raths Web Site < This is my personal web site started December 25th 2000. My son Allen Sherman is the webmaster. When completed it will contain all 16 newsletters, the Sherman Pioneers In Michigan computer file, and my personal family history. The web site now contains about 2,000 pages of text and photographs. Check it out. Suggestions are greatly appreciated.

The Sherman Tombstone Project. This project was described in the September 10 2000 Sherman Newsletter (if you do not have a copy of this newsletter I will send you a copy if requested). The purpose of the project is to have an original or a cenotaph tombstone in good condition for each of my American ancestors. The ten Shermans and their wives included in this project are my direct American lineage from my father Grant David Sherman to our 8th great grandfather Philip Sherman. Currently only generations 1-7 need attention to their tombstones.

Estimated cost of the project:To clean and repair existing tombstones, and purchase and place six tombstones, and purchase cemetery lots as needed. The cost is expected to be from $5-7,000, and may take about 2-3 years to complete if given the proper funding.

If there is anyone in or near Portsmouth RI, South Dartmouth MA, Williamston MA or Aurora NY who can contribute knowledge or leg work for this project please contact me.

Donations to this project have started to be received and are very welcome. If you wish to participate please send your donation to me. The sooner the donations are received the sooner the project will be completed. Suggestions and comments are always welcomed.

The plan to place a tombstone for Philip Shearman (1610-1687) in the cemetery at the Quaker church in Portsmouth RI has been denied by the church. The following is the church's explanation why they will not allow Philip's tombstone in their cemetery:

Dear Mr Sherman, 29 May 2001

Please forgive my not responding to your e-mail sooner. I have been out of town at a Pastor's Conference in South Carolina, then we had some bad news concerning a family member in Fla. who has just been diagnosed with cancer.

This is the first opportunity I have had to catch up on my correspondence since returning.

With respect to your inquiry regarding a monument to your ancestor. Several months ago a letter was drafted and I was under the impression that it had been sent to you regarding your request.

However, there seems to be some question as to if you received this letter at all. Let me therefore, try to bring you up to date with where we are on the issue of the monument.

The Administrative Council of the Church, met and discussed in detail your family's request. Additionally, several different thoughts were taken into consideration concerning placing a monument in the Cemetery.

After long and careful discussion and deliberation the following was the result:

The "Friends or Quakers" of the time your ancestor was associated with the Church, were very much out of favor with the thought of marking graves. They were, as you have come to understand, a simple plain people who were not given to what some of the early "Friends" might have called "pretense."

As a result they did not mark their graves with tomb stones, monuments, markers and such. The "Friends" held to the scripture that, "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord," and with that belief firmly in their hearts and minds, they placed little care or concern about marking graves. They believed that the person was no longer there, but rather was in heaven with the Lord.

Over time, we have indeed allowed for the marking of the grave sites of later "Friends" who have died, but even at that it has been relatively simple.

The final decision of the Administrative Council with respect to your request was that out of respect to the memory and the belief and trust that the " Friends" of the time period your family member was a part of, and in keeping with the "Friends" history and practice of that era, we would respectfully decline your request to place a monument in the cemetery.

We appreciate your concern and we also appreciate the contribution your ancestor made not only to the "Friends Meeting" here, but also to the Community and the state of Rhode Island.

It may be that the Rhode Island State Historical Society, would be interested in allowing a monument of some type to be placed in one of the parks near or around the capital since your ancestor played such an important role in our early state development.

We hope you appreciate the Church's position, and that our declining your offer in no way is meant to diminish or minimize the contribution your ancestor made to our Church, the community and the state in which he lived.

Please accept our sincere appreciation for your consideration toward us in this matter.

Respectfully yours,

Jordan S.C. Jacobson, Sr.

"US Army Military History Institute. One great resource that many genealogists overlook is the U.S. Army’s Military History Institute Special Collections Branch. The mission of the Military History Institute (MHI) is to preserve the Army's history by ensuring access to historical research materials. The MHI library contains over 9 million items relating to military history, including: books, periodicals, photographs, manuscripts (diaries, letter, memoirs), military publications and manuals, maps and oral histories. Some of this material is available online.

Probably the most interesting part of the MHI Special Collections is the huge number of old photographs. I took a look at some of the photos available on the Institute’s Web site. While limited in number, they are a fascinating glimpse into our country’s history. I spent some time looking at Civil War photographs and also many from the Indian Wars and from Spanish-American War. Numerous generals are documented, as are Indian chiefs, common soldiers, and civilians. I especially liked the picture of a prospector and his mules, taken in Arizona in the 1880s. Another one that caught my eye was "The Watch on the Rhine", showing a guard on the Coblenz railroad bridge in Coblenz, Rhenish Prussia, Germany, taken on January 6, 1919. Other online pictures show pictures of the Little Big Horn battlefield taken in 1886 (the battle was fought on June 25, 1876), floods in Louisiana in 1927, daily routine of soldiers in the Korean War, and more.

While fascinating to view, the online collection of photographs represents only a small portion of the Military History Institute’s photography collection. Many thousands of pictures have not yet been scanned and placed online. Luckily, the card catalog is available online. Here you can search for photographs and find a brief description of each. If it is of interest, you can order copies of any photograph via regular mail.

The U.S. Army Military History Institute’s Photograph Database card catalog is available at: carlisle- The collection of online photographs is available at: carlisle-
