SPANAhasambitiousandinnovativeplanstoprotectthewelfareofworkinganimalsandthecommunitiestheysupportbyextendingveterinaryandeducationprogrammestonewcountries.Throughthedeliveryoffreevetcare,emergencyinterventionsandeducationprojects,SPANAalleviatesthesufferingofhardworkinganimalsandhelpsownerstoendurethechallengesofclimaticstress,economichardshipand conflict.

OurnewTrusteewilljointheSPANACounciltohelpusshapeourstrategyandcreatethegrowthnecessarytomeettoourambitiousplans.Thisrolerequiresincome generation expertise gainedatboardlevelinaninternationalsetting,togetherwithdetermination to improve the livesofthousandsof animals in their communities.

Formanyofthosewhotraveltothelessdevelopedpartsoftheworld,itcancomeassomethingofashocktodiscoverquitehowreliantso many societiesstill are onanimals.

Countlesscommunitiesworldwidedependonhorses,mules,donkeys,camelsandoxentotakethe placeoftrucks,tractorsandtaxis.Thesehardworkingandoftenoverlookedanimalsunderpinthelivelihoodsofmanyoftheworld’spoorestpeople,andcontinuetoplayapivotalroleineconomiesrightacrossthedevelopingworld.

InMorocco,mulescarrygoodstothevillagesofthe rural south,ensuringfarmerscangenerateanincomefromtheircrop.InMauritania’scapital,Nouakchott,50,000donkeysdeliverfreshwaterdailytothecity’sonemillionpeople,providingtheonlysourceofdrinkingwaterformostofitspopulation.InMongolia,horsesenablepastoraliststosqueezeameagrelivingfromtheland,coveringvastdistancesinthefreezingwinters.IneastAfrica,livestockandcamelscanbeallthatstandsbetweenlifeanddeathforthenomadiccommunitiesduringthelongandfrequentdroughts.

Animalsaretheverybackboneofthesesocieties.Theyareessentialforfood,forwater,forlivelihoods–forlife.Buttheirlivescanbeshortandofteninvolvegreatsuffering.Workingdayafterdayinextremesoftemperature,oftenwithill-fittingharnessing,inadequatefoodandnoaccesstoveterinarycare,manyworkinganimalsendureconstantpain.

Butitdoesn’t needto bethisway.SPANAisthecharityfortheworkinganimalsoftheworld,dedicatedtorelievingthesufferingofallspecies ofworkinganimal.Eachyearwetreat hundreds of thousandsofanimals. Wevaccinateagainstdisease,tendtoinjuries,relievepainandhelpownerstounderstandhowtheycanbettercarefortheiranimal.

Meanwhile,oureducationteamsarebuildingamorecompassionatefuture,onechild at atime.We do all this with no government funding, relying entirely on those individuals and organisations who understand that the welfare of poor communities depends on animals, and the welfare of those animals depends on SPANA.

ABOUT THE ROLE

ToprovideguidancetotheBoardofTrusteestoensuretheshortandlongtermincome generation and financial viability ofSPANAandtoensurethattheBoardofTrusteesfulfilsitsdutiesandresponsibilitiesforthepropergovernanceofthecharity.

Thegeneral responsibilitiesoftheTrusteesinclude:
  • Overseeallaspectsofgood governanceofSPANA;
  • CommittedtoSPANA’saims and values
  • Willingand abletocommitthenecessarytimeandefforttoSPANA
  • Strategicleadershipanddecision-makingexperienceinanorganisationcomparable in sizeorcomplexitytoSPANA
  • Abletoanalyseinformationand,whennecessary,challengeconstructively
  • AbletorelatewelltoSPANAtrusteesandseniorstaffcollectively and individually

The Board of Trustees may ask the Trustees to take on other specific tasks as necessary where they consider specific knowledge and skills are required. In this instance, the Board are seeking a trustee with fundraising expertise ideally with the skills and attributes listed below:

  • An experienced strategic fundraiser with substantial experience and ideally with an international brief
  • Knowledge of charitable governance and operations in an international organisation
  • Good oral and written communication skills, together with up-to-date fundraising and other relevant Direct Marketing and social media skills

•Oversee SPANA’s management of reputational and other risks related to income generation

•Monitor and advise on SPANA’s income generation strategy

•Contact on a regular basis with the CEO and Director of Fundraising;

•Able to use problem solving and analytical skills at strategic level and when required present effective reports to Council

•Skilled at working as a member of a professional team with a global brief

•Willingness to travel abroad from time to time to view SPANA’s international operations
