3rd Grade Example Schedule

This is an example schedule of the first two weeks of school using the resources provided on the website. This schedule includes a whole group math (45 min) and a small group math (45 min). Small group and whole group may change throughout the week according to the needs of your students. I did not include little details (activators, EQ’s). This is a generic overview of a suggested plan for the first two weeks of school.

BBY Dots can be used to teach all of these standards as well. Click on the “BBY:Dots” link on curriculum map to see how they can be used! Dots are a fantastic visual!

Aug 8th, 9th, 10th

Take this time to teach routines and procedures.

WMPWMV –

·  Teach students that math class will start with WMPWMV. Gather students to a spot in your room where you have felt and room for students to sit.

·  Go over rules.

-  One person will be picked each day to build a number. The teacher will decide how many digits the number will be.

-  Sharing and discussing is a must. Discuss rules for sharing and talking about math in a group.

-  Go over Graphic Organizer and discuss how each day they will answer a question about a number that has been built.

-  Practice folding paper into 4’s for a mini assessment on the 5th day of WMPWMV

-  Teach students how to sketch the place value pieces (VERY IMPORTANT)

-  Teach the pattern of the pieces (see WMPWMV book for more info)

Number Talks –

·  See Number Talk Guide for procedures and rules

·  Watch the video that comes in the book to see how to manage this time

Other Rules, Routines and Procedures for Math

·  Show students where manipulatives are and how they are to be used. (manipulative trays, consequence for not using them correctly, etc)

·  Create a “Math Talk” anchor chart about the do’s of talking about math in a group

·  Practice working in groups and discuss the expectations for cooperative learning

·  Practice learning how to play the generic math games that you may have in independent center all year. I would begin with teaching them some generic multiplication fact games to play for the first few weeks of school.

·  Have students bring in sheet that tells how their parents use math everyday in their job. Talk about this. Throughout the year, try to put students’ parents in word problems you are using.

Aug 13th

Standards: NBT.1

WHOLE GROUP

10 minutes: “WMPWMV”: See Q1 WMPWMV guide for examples of questions to ask after you build a number.

20 minute “Mini Lesson”: See the “Concrete, Representational, Abstract” section for this standard on the 3rd Grade math page. Show how you can figure out rounding with base ten blocks, blank hundred grids and sketching. Also check out the links for BBY WMPWMV and BBY DOTS. Make sure when teaching rounding this week, that you put problems in a real world context so students know why it is important to learn how to round.

10 minute “Students Do”: Let students practice using sketching, base ten blocks, or bby grids to round

5 minute “Summary”:

·  Answer this question in your math journal (this can be done for morning work also – I would collect these every two weeks…I would make a generic rubric and give a grade for journal work every two weeks)

·  How can base ten blocks or sketches help you round numbers?

SMALL GROUP

8 minutes: “Number Talk” –Do not do a number talk today. Explain to students how to play “Round to the nearest 10 and Round to the Nearest 100” game so they can play it in independent center the rest of the week.

37 minutes: “Small Group Work” (10 minute rotations)

·  My table –Practice some more with rounding using base ten and sketching

·  Independent Station –Round to the nearest 10 or 100 game on 3rd Grade math page

·  Computer – Start a group on Successmaker

Aug 14th

Standards: NBT.1

WHOLE GROUP

10 minutes: “WMPWMV”: “WMPWMV”: See Q1 WMPWMV guide for examples of questions to ask after you build a number. You may want to ask a rounding question and use the pieces to help explain thinking.

10 minute “Mini Lesson”: Do Island Hop lesson (do inside with number lines on curriculum map, not with chalk).

20 minute “Students Do”: Give groups number lines and let them round to nearest 10 and 100 using the number lines.

5 minute “Summary”:

·  Answer this question in your math journal

·  Draw a 100 number line (or glue a small one into journal) and use it to round 368 to the nearest 100.

SMALL GROUP

8 minutes: “Number Talk” – See Q1 Number Talk guide. I would start with very simple problems like 4 + 8 until you have taught some of the strategies in whole group. That comes next week….

Talk about the different ways you solved 4 + 8 and share some strategies of your own. Create anchor charts to record those strategies.

37 minutes: “Small Group Work” (10 minute rotations)

·  My table – With the struggling students, I would do “Estimating the Sum or Difference” from Hands on Standards. With my upper students I would play “The Great Round Up” (you will find this on the curriculum map)

·  Independent Station – Play Round to the Nearest 10 or 100 game

·  Computer – Successmaker

Aug 15th

Standards: NBT.1

WHOLE GROUP

10 minutes: “WMPWMV”: See Q1 WMPWMV guide for examples of questions to ask after you build a number.

5 minute “Mini Lesson”: Review

25 minute “Students Do”: Assessment on Rounding

SMALL GROUP

8 minutes: “Number Talk” –Do another addition/subtraction problem from Q1 Number Talk guide (use easy one digit number problems)

37 minutes: “Small Group Work” (10 minute rotations)

·  My table –Play “The Great Round Up” or remediate if needed (tricky triangles - lesson on map – is another approach to rounding…you may want to try that with some students who are still struggling)

·  Independent Station - Rounding to Nearest 10 or 100 game.

·  Computer – Successmaker

Aug 16th

Standards: NBT.2

WHOLE GROUP

10 minutes: “WMPWMV”: See Q1 WMPWMV guide for examples of questions to ask after you build a number.

35 minutes: Do Power of Properties lesson (students don’t have to know the names of the properties but they do need to know how to use them and why they are important.) This understanding will help with strategies in the future.

SMALL GROUP

8 minutes: “Number Talk” – Teach students a game to play in independent center from “Place Value Pack” on the general math instructional page

37 minutes: “Small Group Work” (10 minute rotations)

·  My Table – finish power of properties sheet and use manipulatives if needed for the struggling students

·  Independent Station – Place Value pack game

·  Computer – Successmaker

Aug 17th

Standards: NBT.2

WHOLE GROUP

10 minutes: “WMPWMV”: Build a number. Have students fold paper into 4 sections and answer 4 questions from that week using the number you just built.

10 minute “Mini Lesson”: Show students how to add using base ten blocks and sketches. See “Introducing addition and subtraction” on curriculum map. Don’t relate it to the standard algorithm at the moment. Strategies need to be taught first. BBY Dots is also a fabulous way to introduce addition with regrouping as well as all the other subtraction and addition strategies. Click on BBY Dots on curriculum map for examples.

20 minute do: Allow students to practice adding numbers using base ten blocks or sketches.

SMALL GROUP

8 minutes: “Number Talk” – See Q1 Number Talk guide (still doing add/sub)

37 minutes: “Small Group Work” (10 minute rotations)

·  My Group – Practice add with base ten blocks or sketches. Make sure students can explain what they are doing.

·  Independent Station – Place Value pack game

·  Computer – Successmaker

Aug 20th

Standards: NBT.2

WHOLE GROUP

10 minutes: “WMPWMV”: See Q1 WMPWMV guide for examples of questions to ask after you build a number.

10 minute “Mini Lesson”: Do the exact same thing with subtraction (base ten blocks and sketching)

20 minute “Students do”: Allow students to practice subtracting with sketching and with base ten blocks.

5 minutes summarizer:

·  Answer in your math journal – How can sketching help me subtract?

SMALL GROUP

8 minutes: “Number Talk” – Teach students how to play one of the math games from “Win Win Math Games”. I like “101” or “4 Strikes and Your Out”

37 minutes: “Small Group Work” (10 minute rotations)

·  My table – Practice subtracting with sketches or base ten blocks. Differentiate with larger/smaller numbers.

·  Independent Station – Win Win Math game

·  Computer – Successmaker

Aug 21st – 24th

Standards: NBT.2

WHOLE GROUP

10 minutes: “WMPWMV”: See Q1 WMPWMV guide for examples of questions to ask after you build a number. Continue this for the next few days and don’t forget to assess by folding paper into fourths on the 5th day.

For Aug 21st through Aug 24th, students need to learn the different addition and subtraction strategies. Use the “Addition/Subtraction Strategy Notebook” to help students develop these strategies. Keep an anchor chart of the strategies learned. Using BBY Dots is a great companion to teaching strategies.

In small group continue to practice the different strategies used. Students should begin to become smart about their choice of strategy for certain problems. Students should also be able to prove the strategy with pictures, numbers and words.

Begin with Aug Number talk problems during your number talk time. Challenge students that are accelerating to come up with their own strategy or prove the answer in a different way! Students will need to solve an addition or subtraction problem more than one way for assessments. Check out the assessment section for this standard on the 3rd grade math page.

This is just an example….your small groups may look different depending on what your students need to work on. Your small group also does not have to have rotations every 10 minutes. That is just one example of how you can manage small group time. The best schedule would include 90 minutes for math. The time can be divided in many ways to include whole and small group.
