Early Years Practitioner Job Description

Responsible to: Headteacher, Class Teachers SENCo

Key purpose of the job: To work with the Class Teachers in planning and delivering the curriculum for the Foundation Stage; to provide support to teachers in the management of pupils’ learning. To contribute to and support the overall aims and ethos of the school.

Key areas of responsibility:

Supporting the teacher and the curriculum

  • To provide a full range of stimulating activities for children as part of their physical, intellectual, emotional and social development.
  • To encourage the development of language and speech including the provision of additional assistance and support for those children with special needs.
  • To take a wide interest in all subjects and develop a practical knowledge of a wide range of creative skills
  • To work with the Class Teacher to provide activities appropriate to the educational, social and cultural needs ofall children in the Foundation Stage.
  • To discuss with and assist the teacher-in-charge with the planning and development of the Early Years curriculum.
  • To ensure proper pupil development by adapting provisions according to needs, and by monitoring of progress.
  • To actively participate in the provision of all aspects of the curriculum including music, games, PE, art and craft, social training etc
  • To implement, on the advice of the teacher and/or other professionals, eg speech therapists, individual teaching programmes involving basic self-care, language and cognitive skills.
  • To maintain records of the children’s developments and achievements, including completion of Learning Journey books, through verbal or written feedback.
  • To attend staff meetings to assist in the planning of curricular programmes and to contribute to the overall policies of the class.
  • To be aware of and implement PraeWoodSchool policies and practices
  • To keep confidential all information regarding parents, carers and children (which is made available to you as a result of your work)
  • To communicate to the class teacher information made available as a result of your work
  • To provide clerical / admin support as necessary
  • To take down old displays and put up new backing paper. To mount children’s work and assist teacher in placing the final display
  • To support the teacher in preparing for end of year reports and parent teacher consultations.
  • To gain knowledge of the Letters & Sounds programme and to plan for and deliver sessions to a small group of children every day.

Supporting the pupils:

  • To attend to the health, welfare and safety of the children at all times including playground supervision, care and cleaning of toys, toileting and cleaning incontinent children.
  • To encourage and foster close relationships with children and their parents, offering help and guidance where appropriate.
  • To develop knowledgefor and an understanding of each child’s specific learning needs.
  • To follow the Prae Wood Behaviour Policy

Other duties

  • To have contact with the Headteacher, teaching staff, children and parents.
  • To be aware of Child Protection and other safeguarding policies and procedures and to implement them when necessary
  • To communicate with Social Workers and Health Visitors, Education Psychologists, Speech Therapists and other professional agents as required
  • Postholders will be encouraged to attend in-service training courses
  • To be aware of and support difference and ensure that pupils have equality of access to opportunities to learn and develop.
  • To attend in house Teaching Assistant meetings and training sessions
  • To undertake Performance Management procedures
  • To undertake Paediatric First Aid training
  • To be constantly aware of Health and Safety issues in regard to the school premises, children, other staff and parents
  • To use your initiative in an emergency
  • To accompany teachers and pupils on out-of-school activities and take responsibility for a group, under the direction of a teacher.
  • To carry out any other duties that reasonably correspond to the general nature of the post
