Language Arts 1 & 2 Syllabus
Classroom Rules:
In order for each student to receive a quality education, it is important to have a positive learning environment. Therefore it is necessary for all students to adhere to the following classroom rules and expectations. 1. Raise your hand for permission to speak.
2. Do not get out of your seat without permission.
3. Respect the classroom, your classmates and the teacher.
4. Listen attentively when someone else is talking.
5. Keep our room clean. These rules can all be summed up in one statement: Have a thoughtful purpose for all of your actions. And we will do the same.
Classroom Expectations: Please be familiar with all school rules and expectations covered in your planner. The teachers will follow school policies on consequences and has the ability to add her own consequences where she sees fit.
Classroom Procedures:
- Bellwork (DO NOW) will be on the Promethean Board daily. As soon as you come to class, begin working on it. Make sure that you copy down the date and follow all directions.
- Use the proper MLA heading on all papers.
- Stay in your seat until we dismiss you.
PASSES WILL NOT BE ISSUED TO RESTROOMS OR LOCKERS. In extreme emergencies, exceptions may be made, excluding the first and the last 10 minutes of class. Planners must be used in order to get a hall pass.
**These expectations include any rules not mentioned, but implied, in order to carry out the education and safety of all students.**
Grades:
AnAmeans the student has completed proficient work on all course objectives and advanced work on some objectives.
ABmeans the student has completed proficient work on all course objectives.
ACmeans the student has completed proficient work on the most important objectives, although not on all objectives. The student is ready to move on to more concepts.
ADmeans the student has completed proficient work on at least one-half of the course objectives but is missing some important objectives and is at significant risk of failing. The student should repeat the concept until they have a C or above.
AnEmeans the student has completed proficient work on fewer than one-half of the course objectives and cannot successfully complete the course.
Grading Scale/Policy:
100-93 = A92-90 = A-89-88 = B+87-83 = B
82-80 = B-79-78 = C+77-73 = C72-70 = C-
69-68 = D+67-63 = D62-60 = D-59-0 = E
FINAL EXAM = up to 15% of your semester grade.
Report cardgrades will be obtained by averaging all grades from homework/class work, tests/quizzes, participation/bell work, projects, and papers within this class. A final grade in the class will be the average of ALL marking periods within a semester. I will round grades that are .5 on report cards.

*Retake Policy:
We will make summative assessmentretakesavailable based on the following process:
1. Print the Retake Request Form from our blog.
2. Fill out the form within 3 days of receiving your test grade and give to teacher.
3. Attend at least two tutoring sessions with documentation from tutoring teacher.
4. Review Request form with teachers and schedule retake time and date.
Note: End-of-semester exams cannot beretaken
*Homework/late work:
Classwork/homework is not optional. I expect every assignment to be done to the best of your ability.
A. Homework is due at the beginning of class. After that, it is considered LATE.
B. Late work will result in 10% off the first day, 20% the second, 50% the third, and no work will be accepted after 3 days.
*Attendance: Refer to the attendance and policy in classroom and planners and sent home in the mail.

*Week at a Glance:
On the board you will find our Week at a Glance. It would be a very good idea to copy this down every Monday in your planner so that you know what is expected of you for the entire week. This is part of taking responsibility for your own education. We will also post updates on ourblog. You are responsible for visiting to keep track of absent work, homework updates, and due dates.
*Academic Misconduct Policy:
PLEASE DO NOT EVEN ATTEMPT TO CHEAT. WE CAN ALWAYS TELL AND THE CONSEQUENCES ARE HARSH.
- Per the English Department at Fordson High School, you will receive a zero on the assignment (see footnote #1)
- You will receive a phone call home
- You will receive an office referral.

This study includes the basic writing skills of paragraph development, essay assessment, and research skills. The course will include direct instruction in reading comprehension and modeling of the reading process as well as in writing conventions, vocabulary development, and sentence variety that are integrated in the writing process. Writing assignments include personal and creative writing, response to literature, expository and reflective compositions, and research essays. Students will read purposely using the comprehensive and self-monitoring strategies as they encounter increasing challenging content-area and literary text.
