3.POSTGRADUATE WORK AND CURRENT RESEARCH

As part of an MRC project led by Dr Derek Yach assessing the needs of the health services during and after periods of political violence, I was responsible for the section relating to nurses and nursing services. This was later expanded into my masters project.

As a departmental team (UCT Department of Nursing) we undertook research into the health profile and living conditions of domestic workers and their children, and the conditions of service of the domestic workers. This preceded the extension of the provision of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act to domestic workers. I was responsible for drafting the successful grant proposal submitted to the MRC, and later project co-ordinator. (August 1994 - September 1997.)

In collaboration with two researchers in the UCT Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology (Dr Richard Johanson & Dr Peter de Jong), we implemented a project (The St Monica's Midwifery Assisted delivery trial) to investigate the feasibility of registered midwives doing vacuum deliveries for prolonged labour and fetal distress. Funding was obtained from the MRC, and I co-ordinated the project for a short period.

In collaboration with two nursing colleagues, we undertook a participatory action research with registered nurses in developing a paediatric critical care nursing curriculum action research project to design a curriculum. Funding was obtained from the Critical Care Society (South Africa)

Current research is towards a PhD (in Maternal and Child Health). This is a cluster randomised trial to determine if atraining and mentoring intervention would improve the standard of clinical management in labour by midwives in rural primary level facilities. A research development grant from the MRC for R50 000, and an NRF grant for R90 000 were awarded. A research development grant of R30 000 was granted from the University of Cape Town University Research Committee Emerging Researcher Programme.
