SSC title:SSC with the Royal College of General Practitioners
Location: Bristol and London
Background
The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) is the professional membership body and guardian of standards for family doctors in the UK, working to promote excellence in primary healthcare. They are committed to improving patient care, clinical standards and GP training.
Dr Terry Kemple is President of the RCGP.
Dr Kemple has been mostly a full time general practitioner for over 30 years in Bristol and has kindly agreed to supervise 2 SSC students this year. Although he retired as senior partner from his practice at Horfield Health Centre at the end of 2015 he continues to have roles including doing occasional clinical sessions, teaching, research and appraisals in his former practice and the NHS.
He has enjoyed a fulfilling career in general practice that started in 1980 with paper notes and the five and a half partners covering their patients on a rota overnight and at weekends including GP community beds and intrapartum care. Since then he and his practice has always been at the forefront of quality, innovation, teaching, and research in general practice.
This SSC would enable students to shadow Dr Kemple to learn more about the extended roles available within primary care and to learn about and contribute to the work of the RCGP.
Aims of the SSC
  1. Learn about the extended roles available in Primary Care through shadowing Dr Terry Kemple for approximately 2-3 days per week during the SSC. *
  2. Understand the work of the Royal College of General Practitioners and it’s various departments both nationally and regionally, through visits to 30 Euston Square, London, and the Severn Faculty Offices
  3. Make a positive contribution to the efforts of the RCGP to improve the image of general practice and recruitment into general practice
*please note that some meetings will necessarily be confidential and students may not be able to attend all meetings with Dr Kemple.
Clinical Placements
You will have the opportunity to shadow Dr Kemple in his work for the College. His usual work pattern currently is: going to the RCGP in London on Wednesday, having meetings Wednesday afternoon then a working dinner on Wednesday night, staying overnight with a breakfast meeting at 8am on Thursday, then travel home to Bristol on Thursday afternoon or evening. There are also meetings on other days elsewhere. The pattern of work and exact nature of shadowing would be decided together nearer the time. Dr Kemple undertakes some ad-hoc clinical sessions at Horfield and students may be able to join these if a session occurred during the SSC period. There may also be opportunities to understand the work related to being a Training Programme Director for GP Training and the work of a GP champion for research for the National Institute of Health Research.
Students would be expected to pay for their own travel costs and accommodation during the placement.
Cont/
Assessment
You will do a written report, following the standard format for Year 3/4 SSCs. This will allow reflection on the whole placement, but the majority of the report will be based on a project undertaken during the 3-4 week SSC period. The details of the project will be decided upon in conjunction with Dr Kemple (or a named supervisor at the RCGP) at your initial meeting. The aim would be to undertake a project during your SSC which makes a positive contribution to the efforts of the RCGP to improve the image of general practice and improve recruitment into general practice. You will explore the literature related to aspects of primary care recruitment and discuss ways in which the situation might be improved.
