Orkney Badminton Association hosted one of their biggest competitions on Sunday 17th November 2013. The Primary Schools Singles & Doubles has always been challenging due to the sheer number of players and officials involved. The Organisers extend a massive thankyou to everyone who helped and took part.
Orkney Badminton are delighted to have R Clouston Ltd sponsoring the Primary School competitions for the 2nd year in a row, which also includes the team event held at the end of the season. A huge thank you to them for supporting and promoting this age Group Championships again this season..
Games were timed up to the Finals, where 1 set to 21 was then played. Plate Competitions were also drawn up in each event for 1st round losers. 50 Players entered and entertained us with many close games. Orkney Badminton are delighted to see so many boys and girls playing at such a high standard in this age Group which is credit to the coaches & parents involved. 7 Schools were represented this year being Dounby(D), Glaitness (G), Firth (F), Stromness (S) St Andrews (StA), Papdale(P) and Evie (E).
There were 16 entries in the Girls Singles. Charis Reid(P) played against Keira Stevenson (G) for 3rd & 4th place, Play was quite even until Charis edged away to win 21-14. The Final was between Adele Flett (P) and Kasey Garriock (G). Adele had been playing extremely well leading up to the Final,where she continued her fine form. Kasey had to work very hard for every point she could gain and although she played some fine shots, Adele never allowed her to settle, taking the title 21-5. Ann Lennie(St A) & Isla Donaldson(St A) contested the Plate Final with Ann emerging the winner 21-8.
The Girls Doubles had 7 entries. 3rd place went to Lilly Gray & Maddy MacDonald(G) following the withdrawal of NicolaWilliams & HollieTowers(F). The Final was another Papdale/Glaitness clash wirh Adele & Charis(P) playing Kiera & Kasey(G). Play was quite evenly matched with all 4 girls covering the court well, before Kiera & Kasey pulled ahead to win 21-16. The Plate was won by Ann Lennie(St A) & Nicola Sutherland (S) who played together for the first time winning against Emily Humpreys & Amy Tait(StA) 21-8.
There were 34 entries in the Boys Singles and lots of good close games played. Reid Kemp(G) and Charlie Corsie(G) played off for 3rd & 4th place with both boys placing the shuttle well, Reid eventually edged ahead to win 21-16. The Final was between Jamie Clouston(P) and Tommy Ballantine(G). This proved to be a very exciting and close match with both boys placing the shuttle well and moving one another around the court, it was point for point all the way and they were still level at 21-21, next 2 clear points decided the winner and Tommy came through to win 23-21. An excellent performance from both boys in this age group. 16 boys played in the Plate and the Final was between Fraser Bruce(G) and Ross Leslie (G) with Ross emerging the winner 21-15.
The Boys Doubles had 16 entries. Ross Sinclair & Jay Foubister(G) played Jamie Clouston & Archie Flett(P) in 3rd & 4th playoff with Ross & Jay emerging the winners 21-14. The Final was an all Glaitness affair with Tommy Ballantine & Charlie Corsie playing Reid Kemp & Ewan Flett. All 4 boys were evenly matched and worked well together, Tommy & Charlis eventually edged ahead to take the title 21-14. The Plate Final was won by Finn Hancock (St A) & Alexander Hall (E) playing together for the first time winning against Scott Rendall & Alex Cooper (St A) 21-10.
