40 Proud Years of Fishing Tradition

ow, it’s September already. Since we have some new Bassmasters this year I want to inform you about the annual Bassmasters Scholarship. Darryl Crippen got this started years ago and has been the force behind it since. I am sure he will be healthy enough to oversee it again this year. What we do is every year give a Bassmaster or one of their family members some money to help with the cost of college. So if you or one of your family members is enrolled in an accredited college pick up and fill out the application. Everything you need to know is on the form. Applications will be available at our meeting the rest of the year.

We had a great turn out for Bunco night, although about a dozen of you that signed up failed to show. Now we aren’t going to force you to pay. But plans were made and prizes were bought based on you showing up, and you know we really missed seeing you. So it’s up to you. If you signed up and didn’t make it, please give Frank Neugebauer the money he has coming. Thank You.

We are going to have a fun night tournament in October. Check out Bud’s VP article to get all the info. He has about 24 boaters signed up and some back seaters to pair up with the ones needing a partner. If you want to fish and haven’t signed up see Bud.

Last month I told you the story of my first tournament with the Bassmasters way back in the 1970’s, and I said we would have a new story each month from a Bassmaster telling a story about how things were back then….. Well our story teller this month is AWOL, I haven’t heard from him so I will tell you another story of mine. Since we are going to Havasu that’s where the story is about.

It was November 1979, I was 20 years old and Havasu was a little different then. No smallmouth, No fish structures not a lot of boat traffic and it was nowhere near the fishery it is now. I remember the bridge but nothing was around it and I don’t remember anything about the town. Should have bought a place back then. We all camped at Crazy Horse on the Island. We had a lot of our spouses there making for a great family atmosphere. It was like one of our Beach parties with bonfires each night. A lot of fun. I fished with Greg Gardner in his silver Glastron. We fished down lake throwing garland jigs and cranks against the steep walls. There was no internet and I had never seen a map of the lake so I had no idea that it was a river lake and we never went north. I had fished Mohave to the north but never knew they were connected. Now a days we know almost everything we need to know as soon as the tournament schedule is out. I have no idea how I finished all I remember that Greg back then just like now whipped my butt.Okay Greg it’s time for me to get even.

See You on the Water!

unco has come and gone and once again it was fun night for everyone. There were sixty people signed up but only forty eight attended. Even so, the event ended up being one of our best fund raisers of the year. I would like to thank my wife, Donalea for planning and hosting Bunco. As with any successful SDBM event, we had a lot of help. Thanks to Jennifer Louis, Denise DeSalvo, Vicki Becker and Luralea Louis for helping throughout the evening and thanks to Wendy Baird for doing her usual great job selling raffle tickets. Also, we really appreciate everyone that brought tables and chairs.

At the last general meeting, I brought up the idea of a having a fun night tournament. At this point we have forty three people signed up. The tournament will take place on October 14th at El Cap. This will be a team tournament, so every boat will have two fishermen. Family and friends are welcome. I still have five members looking for a ride, so please give a call if you are still needing a partner. The entry fee is $50.00 per person, and I will be collecting the entry fees at the next general meeting. This tournament will be run just like the last fun tournament at Otay. Based on the current participants signed up, the heavy string payout will be about $225.00 and the two random draws should get around $100.00. I am not planning on organizing a big fish pool for the event, but if anyone wants to take care of it, please let me know. I will go over all of the final details at the general meeting. Be sure to remember to bring your entry fee!

See you on the water

t’s amazing how fast you can go up or down in the standings when you have a good or bad tournament. I am still feeling a little dizzy from my recent trip “down.” And the 3 guys at the top have had a steady, consistent, trip up. And we still have 3 events to go. Expect a lot of changes in the Top 12 in those last 3 tournaments. Work on your game plans, hope for good luck, and make the most of it when it comes your way. 2 out of town, and 1 in. It’s gonna be exciting, it’s gonna be fun. Who will be our Top 6 when the dust clears?

Otay at night was a good test of our skills. It turned out to be a good night for limits; we had 31 limits out of the 37 who fished. That’s good fishing!

1st place went to Ron Overman. Ron had 3 fish for 9.59 lbs. Those points he earned took him from 8th up to 5th in the year-end standings. Good job, Ron! 2nd place was Larry Ward with 3 fish that weighed 8.52 lbs. 3rd went to “Mr. Consistency” himself, Bud Brant. Bud had 3 fish for 8.52 lbs. Big fish went to Dave Mack. His fish weighed 4.50 lbs. That’s 2 big fish in a row for Dave. Good job, all you guys!

Again, thank you to our weigh-in team, it all went very smooth and we didn’t have any problems, because all you San Diego Bassmasters performed well and worked well together – Thank you!

Next tournament – Lake Havasu! The fishing should b really good, just like last year. We will have a meeting Thursday night – more on that at the next meeting. Our weigh-in will be the same way we did it in April. We will have the water tank set up to hold your fish while you are in line. We will use 8 bags, but will ask you not to bunch up. After you weigh your fish, put them back into your live well and take them out for release beyond the buoy line. If we can use the live release boat we will let you know at the Thursday night meeting. Also, at the General Membership meeting we will draw for start positions and collect for big fish.

See you there…

ell, we wrapped up the night tournaments on the official schedule at Otay in August. It was not quite as wide open as I had hoped but a lot of people caught fish. I had the pleasure of fishing with Ms. Vicki Becker who put it on me from the back seat. We spent the night in the Otay arm fishing from two to thirty feet. Ms. Becker stuck a 3.72 pound fish between 1:10 and 1:30 AM that was a great cull and earned a respectable 7th place finish. I unfortunately could not find a decent fish like that and rolled in 17 spots back in 24th. Still it was a great night fishing condition wise and a lot of fun.

Congratulations to the winner, Ronnie Old Guys Rule Overman, who was able to snatch another Otay victory away from Mr. Consistency, Larry Ward, who came in second. It is my recollection that Mr. Ward has had another good day at Otay earlier this year. And sliding into third was Bud-It’s Time for the Year End Run-Brant. I noticed Mr. Brant is in third place overall and that is in spite of having to miss the first tournament of the year. Josh R. is second and Mr. Consistency is leading the pack. One good thing about being 24th in the standings such as myself, I never get that feeling that someone is going to run me over from behind. Someday, maybe someday.

We did not have a raffle last month to raise money; however, Big Wave Dave Seaberg donated two concert tickets to the club to be auctioned off. After what can only be described as a brutal, blood thirsty, leave no man standing battle between Ryan Test and myself, I crawled out with the tickets at a screaming deal of $40.00 for the club’s coffers. Thanks Dave.

August is also Bunco month. Once again the Brant’s generously hosted the event at their sprawling East County compound. Bunco is always a lot of fun and this year was no different. I achieved a new high in lows by winning the most ones contest which if you do not know how to play Bunco would be like winning the most lost fish prize in a fishing tournament. The upside to the situation was that Wendy-You Are Going to Buy Raffle Tickets-Baird took pity on me when she saw the 30 tickets I had to buy due to the aforementioned ones deal. Between Wendy’s efforts selling tickets as well as both Donalea Brant and Donalea’s mom selling the mulligan tickets, and everyone’s participation, we made $360.00 for the club. A special thanks to the Brant family for all their efforts in putting this on every year.

Now for the numbers, we currently have $7,278.50 in the savings account and another $3,771.12 in the savings account for a total of $11,049.62. Of that amount, $280.00 is allocated for the progressive big fish pot. The club spent $1,500.00 over the last two months for the permits to have our night tournaments. Bunco Night was the last official club event to raise money. As you have heard, we are working on a night tournament in October. Besides generating some money for the club, this tournament could be off the hook as far as the fishing results. I am excited about the prospect and I hope everyone else is as well.

See you on the water

Forgot my glasses
Yesterday, my wife asked why I didn't do something useful with my time. She suggested I go down to the senior center and hang out with the guys my own age.I did this, and when I got home last night I toldher that I had joined a parachute club.

She said "Are you nuts? You're almost 70 years old andyou're going to start jumping out of airplanes?"

I proudly showed her that I even got a membership card.

She said to me, "You idiot, where are your glasses! This is a membership to a Prostitute Club, not a Parachute Club!"
I'm in trouble again and don't know what to do! I signed up for five jumps a week!

embership in our great club remains at the maximum of 50 members. We are currently preparing to tournament pre-fish our next member in waiting. His name is Chuck Brauten and he is excited for the opportunity to join our club. Lets all take a moment to introduce ourselves at the next meeting. He was pre-fished by Josh Rhodes. Josh had great things to say about him as a person and as a fisherman.

In other news, on Thursday evening Jim Putney will be giving a special speech on buoy elimination tactics he learned at the river. Josh and Juan have agreed to fish out of the same float tube for Havasu and Greg Gardener is using his new smart phone to create a SD Bassmasters face book page.

See you at Havasu!!!!!

AT THE CURRENT RATE, THE NUMBER OF LAKE DEATHS COULD BREAK RECORDS THIS BOATING SEASON.

Another Lake tragedy Again,

MONDAY, JULY 18, 2011: The Havasu News-Herald reported yet another Lake tragedy just midway through this 2011 boating season. The bodies of an Illinois couple thrown from a boat near Site Six Friday evening were recovered Sunday morning from Lake Havasu. Although the cause of the accident wasn’t immediately known, reports indicate the watercraft made a sudden turn, throwing all passengers into the Lake. One couple was immediately rescued and transported to Lake Havasu

MCSO investigates two watercraft accidents

"Be careful at the mouth of the river!"

Mohave County Sheriff’s Office investigated two separate single-watercraft collisions Saturday that occurred on the Colorado River — one injuring a California woman and the second tossed two men, but both were uninjured. “One (boat accident) was minor (and resulted) with a hurt back,” said MCSO Sgt. Doug Schuster on Monday. “And one (boat) flipped over but no one was hurt.”

According to a MCSO press release, waterway deputies responded to a single-injury boating accident that occurred north of the Sandbar about 11:40 a.m. Saturday morning. Boat operator Jeffrey Snyder, 54, of Santa Ana, Calif., was underway in the vessel when the boat encountered a large wake from another watercraft. Janet Armstrong, 60, of Simi Valley, Calif., was bounced during the boat’s impact with the wave causing injury to her back.Lake Havasu City Fire Department’s fireboat responded and transported Armstrong to shore. Then River Medical ambulance service transported the injured woman to Havasu Regional Medical Center.

Later that day, MCSO waterway deputies responded to a watercraft accident in the North Basin of Lake Havasu about 3:35 p.m. after a 27-foot Lightning Pitchfork boat was sunk. When arriving on scene deputies observed the nose of the boat up in the air and the body was submerged, according to officials. Investigations determined boat operator Steve Sundling, 41, of Mission Hills, Calif., and passenger Darik Anderson, 42, of Bullhead City, were traveling northbound on the Colorado River at the mouth of the Lake’s north basin when the boat’s outdrive motor caught a sandbar beneath the surface of the water. The boat was traveling about 60 mph at the time of impact resulting in an immediate hard right turn throwing the two occupants from the vessel. Both men were uninjured after they each landed in about three feet of water, MCSO officials said.
