DOCTOR OF NURSING PRACTICE PROGRAM
Guidelines for Development ofa Competency-Based
Educational Portfolio
- Purpose
Portfolio Assessment
The American Association of Colleges of Nursing established essential competencies for the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). A competency based portfolio documents professional progress and achievements relative to established criteria.
- Policy
All students will complete a DNP Essentials Competency Based portfolio in NUR 739 Scholarly Project course. The completed portfolio provides an organized mechanism to document student learning outcomes and achievements. The Portfolio also serves as an evaluative tool related to the alignment of DNP graduate outcomes and established competencies.
- Procedure
General Guidelines for Portfolio Developmentshall include the following:
Students will use the Typhon system to create the portfolio. The portfolio must be submitted electronically within the Typhon system to the faculty advisor. No hard copy portfolios will be accepted. While each student’s portfolio is a unique representation of the individual’s professional accomplishments and may vary in appearance and content, there is a measure of standardization. For example all students are required to provide documentation of how they achieved each DNP essentialsbased competency.
The student’s portfolio will be evaluated by the student’s assigned faculty advisor using the attachedCompetency-BasedPortfolio Evaluation Form. Each applicable criterionlisted on the form shall be included in thestudent’s portfolioand evaluated as either a “Pass” or “Fail”.Students must pass all applicable criteria components to successfully meet the DNP Portfolio requirements.
