The meeting was convened at 2:00 p.m. by Chairperson Kent Machina. Minutes from the last meeting will be sent out for approval by email.
Rhondal and Chris reported on their review of the proposal for HIS 104 Historical Studies of Asia, Middle East, Africa, Latin America and Indigenous Peoples (OC-KD/H). This course would replace existing course HIS 103 (OC-DKCC/SS) and would serve as the "umbrella" course, allowing various instructors to then collaboratively focus on their own disciplinary and regional specialties. Rhondal voiced concern that the syllabus was lacking in Humanities content. A discussion took place, after which it was decided that Lou would request syllabi from the various sections to verify their Humanities content. This proposal will be on the agenda for next meeting.
The continuing discussion from last meeting then took place regarding the proposal from Dr. Eric Thomas on the Major in University Studies, a new Interdisciplinary Studies major. After several concerns were raised, a number of suggested changes were made in the document. The Major Requirement, which specified the "completion of a 1to3-credit capstone seminar, research project or Professional Practice experience", will now include a fourth item, that being "a supervised community service experience". The wording of the document was changed to clarify that only one of the four items was required. Clarification was also made that "Undergraduate Studies will assume responsibility for the supervision of the capstone seminar, the research project, the Professional Practice experience, and the community service experience". Upon motion by Jamal Nassar and second by Steve Whitmore, the proposed revisions were approved. Upon motion by Lou Perez and second by Steve Whitmore, the proposal was approved, as amended. The revisions will be made to the document immediately and given to Dr. Thomas and Dr. Alferink for their concurrence; submission will then be made to the University Curriculum Committee for their approval.
Upon motion by Jerry Jinks and second by Kay Weir, the proposal for the change in requirements for Major and Minor in General Studies was approved. In addition to changing the requirements for these Interdisciplinary Studies major and minor programs, the approved proposal also changes their titles to "Interdisciplinary Studies".
The pending preproposal on Sociology of Religion and the proposals for the change in requirements for Minor in Latin American Studies and Minor in Ethnic and Cultural Studies will be on the agenda for next meeting, which will be held on Monday, April 23. Syllabi review will also continue. This meeting adjourned at 3:05 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Bonnie Laesch, Recording Secretary
