NOMINATION CATEGORIES & GENERAL CRITERIA

Debi Nixon Education Award

Ms. Nixon was a pioneer in the fight against substance abuse in the schools and community. She passed away from cancer in 2002. This award was created to honor her memory and undying perseverance and commitment to providing youth with safe and drug free communities. This award is presented to an individual who works in the field of education and exemplifies the passions of prevention pioneered by Debi Nixon.

Criteria:

  • May be nominated by a community-based organization, educational institution, law enforcement agency, or individual.
  • Must have been working in the field of education for a minimum of one (1) year
  • Demonstrated excellence, innovation and impact through work in community prevention efforts such as mentoring, developing drug-free programs, helping gat-risk youth, etc.

Outstanding Prevention Program Award

This award will go to an outstanding prevention program that best follows the federal and/or county prevention platform strategies and/or the educational principles of effectiveness for research-based programs.Must also demonstrate success and community impact through measurable outcome.

Criteria:

  • May be nominated by a community-based organization, educational institution, law enforcement agency, or individual.
  • Program uses Federal and/or County prevention strategies and/or Federal Dept of Education’s Principles of Effectiveness.
  • Program demonstrates a proven track record of measurable outcome.

The Enrique “Kiki” Camarena Law Enforcement Award

Special Agent Enrique (Kiki) S. Camarena, of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) was kidnapped and tortured by Mexican drug traffickers on February 7, 1985. His body was discovered on March 5, 1985. During his 11 years with DEA, he received two Sustained Superior Performance Awards, a Special Achievement Award and, posthumously, the Administrator's Award of Honor, the highest award granted by the DEA.Kiki served, and eventually gave his life, to help keep illegal drugs and the violence that comes with them out of our communities. This award will go to an individual currently serving within the law enforcement arena who goes above and beyond the call of duty within their community to promote prevention, and exemplifies the spirit of fallen DEA Special Agent, Enrique “Kiki” Camarena.

Criteria:

  • May be nominated by a community-based organization, educational institution, law enforcement agency, or individual.
  • Working in the field of any law enforcement for a minimum of one (1) year.
  • Working in community prevention efforts such as mentoring, developing drug-free programs, helping youth at risk, etc.

Youth Prevention Award & “Natural High” Youth Scholarship

This will be awarded to a middle or high school student who has championed for the cause by providing leadership in prevention efforts within their school and community.

Criteria:

  • May be nominated by a community-based organization, educational institution, law enforcement agency, or individual.
  • Age 18 or under
  • Active in their community and/or in good standing at their school
  • Exemplify a healthy drug-free lifestyle
  • Demonstrated youth leadership qualities
  • Recognized work in the area of prevention

Frank Goldsmith Lifetime Achievement Award

This award will go to a person who has been a leader in the field of drug prevention for at least seven (7) years and is recognized for their iconic work and success in the field.

Criteria:

  • May be nominated by a community-based organization, educational institution, law enforcement agency, or individual.
  • Community involvement in prevention (volunteer, staff, board member, business leader, civic leader, etc.)
  • Exemplify a healthy drug-free life style.
  • Recognized leader in the field of prevention for at least seven (7) years
