BUIST 2014-15 INFORMATION SHEET FOR PARENTS
(NOTE: Ordered waiting lists already exist for each grade level except kindergarten. If your child has applied for grades 1 – 8, he/she will be placed at the end of the appropriate waiting list.) (Parents must notify the Office of Assessment and Evaluation of changes in address and telephone/cell number(s) or risk removal from the waiting list in the event that a seat becomes available).
1. Criteria for admission to Kindergarten,and Grades 1 – 8:
A. Age requirements for admission during the 2014-2015 academic year:
-A child must be 5 on or before September 1, 2014, to be admitted to kindergarten.
-A child must be 6 on or before September 1, 2014, to be admitted to first grade.
B. A child must have academic success in all academic subjects. The academic subjects
include reading, language, math, science, social studies (or their equivalents, e.g. English).
The child cannot be repeating the grade level (K–8) for which he/she is applying for or
enrolled, or have failed any subject areas.
C. Kindergarten
-Applicants are randomly ordered for selection, and a percentage of children are notified for testing.
-A child must be tested by CCSD staff and obtain a minimum national percentile rank of 75.
-There is no provision for a student to be retested on the kindergarten admissions test.
-Overall test results will be shared with students' families, but because the sole purpose of this assessment is to screen students for Buist admission, no detailed feedback will be provided.
-The test scores for kindergarten children who have been tested and are on the waiting list are valid for one year. After that time,we will use your child’s most recent achievement test score results to make selection decisions. If your child does not have any test scores, we will then test your child.
D. Grades 1 – 8
-A child must be tested on PASS or a recent version of a national standardized, norm-referenced achievement test approved by CCSD’s Office of Assessment and Evaluation.
-A child must be at the Exemplary level on PASS in both English/Language Arts and Math. Alternatively, a child must attain a minimum national percentile rank of 75 on both the reading and mathematics tests of the most recent edition of a national standardized, norm-referenced achievement test. The most recent scores available will be used for eligibility.
2. Selection for acceptance:
The following selection process was reviewed and approved by the Charleston County School
District Board of Trustees in 2003.
Category I – (Sibling) 12 seats of the total admissions shall be allocated to qualified
siblings of students attending Buist during the year of admittance. Any unfilled student slots will go
to Category III.
Category II – (District 20) 13 seats of the total admissions shall be allocated to qualified
studentswhose primary residence is in District 20 at the time of acceptance. Any unfilled student
slots willgo to Category III.
Category III – (County) 13 seats of the total admissions shall be allocated to districts
studentswho qualify.
Category IV – (Low Performing Schools) 12 seats of the total admissions shall be allocated
to qualified students whose primary residence is located in a low performing school zone. Low
performing schools are identified from the latest School Report Card Absolute achievement ratings
and are considered thosehaving Absolute ratings of Below Average or At-Risk. Any unfilled student
slots will go toCategory III.
Note: Applicants can be in more than one category.
3. Applications postmarked after the deadline specified, will not be accepted, and the parent can reapplythe following year.
4. Students must be Charleston County residents by August of the school year they are applying for.
5. Students in grades 1-8 are expected to enroll at the beginning of the school year, if accepted during the summer; or within 10 days of notification, if accepted during the school year.
6. Openings will only be filled through the first semester. Students filling openingsthat occur after the first semester will enter Buistthe following fall.
7. If a child with a sibling on the waiting list enrolls in Buist, the sibling can be addedto theend
of the existing sibling waiting list.
8. If a child with a sibling graduates (8th to 9th grade) or is withdrawn for any reason, the applicantis removed from the sibling waiting list.
9. Students accepted in Category II – (District 20) must maintain their primary residence in District 20 in order to continue their enrollment in Buist Academy.
