SOUTH AUGUSTA FOOTBALL CLUB
YEAR SUMMARY
2008
PRESIDENT REPORT
Tonight marks the end of another football year for the club and another hard year for the volunteers who continue to keep the club up there as one of the best in the Spencer Gulf League.
Tonight we also recognise the A grade premiership anniversaries of 1918, 1928, 1938, the B grade premiership victories of 1948 and 1978 and the under 18s premiership of 1998 which are a great part of our history.
The victories of the under 18s in the Grand final and the presence of the B grand on the big day indicates that we have a good future ahead of us if we want it.
May thanks to Gary Kernahan, Mark Mckell and Ryan Struck who contributed their time and effort during the year , especially Gary who has coached the A grade for a record 8 years, I’m sure he’ll still stay involved.
Joyce Phillips who retired last year after 40 years as Guernsey steward needs to be recognised for an outstanding effort and having to clean Kernas guernsey for over 20 years is a feat in itself. Many thanks to the Junior Coaches for producing the lads who want to play for the club and the many volunteers who work tirelessly during the year to fundraise and get the footballers on the park.
Don’t forget the Racing tips start this weekend, its not too late to join and look out for a possible Monster raffle which is in the air and may be a great fundraiser.
The Management committee is in the final stages of bringing in a ‘Code of conduct’ within the club which hopefully will improve the standard of behaviour so please take it on board.

A GRADE COACHES REPORT
Season 2008 finished off poorly after we finished out of the top 4. That was a very disappointing result for us considering there were opportunities late in the season to consolidate a position inside the top 4. The positive of the season is that under 18’s & B grade both played off in the grand final with the 18s winning the premiership both Ryan Struck & Mark McKell should be congratulated along with their support staff. Mark McKell has retired from coaching and his job at South’s has been done very well in difficult circumstances at times.
Our club can look forward to future success with our policy of giving kids an opportunity to play senior footy. Numerous under 18s played at least one A grade game this season and all acquitted them selves well.
Late in the season we had 7 or 8 kids who made our A grade team which is a credit to them and their coaches when they came through our junior grades, that I believe is the great strength of our club.
I would like to thank the football committee headed by Harry Waterworth and Mark Shirley for their support, Val Waterworth and her support staff including Cletus Moroney, Andrew Magarey, Robert Laube and all the regulars who ran water etc should also be recognized for their outstanding support of football at South’s. Nick Herons help as team manager was excellent along with Ricky Gill as time keeper Mark McKell, Anthony Anno, Ryan Struck and Mick Kellett also need to be thanked for their support at training, in planning and just being available to discuss anything involving the team. Our club committee is also thanked for their support and allowing us to get on with the football side of the club, thanks to Hucky and all those involved.
As your probably aware I have retired from coaching but would like to be involved in the club for many years to come. I would like to sincerely thank the club in giving me the opportunity to coach our great club. It has been an absolute privilege to be involved in helping develop players like our new captain Adam Grantham, vice captian Christian Reid, Matt Grantham, Trevor Hannes, Simon Brusnahan, Chris Heron, Daniel Dohnt, Michael Curley, Brock Laube, Todd Kernahan, Jordan Madigan, The Kerin boys, Brett Jones, Ricky Johnson, Scott Treleavan, Marcus Gill & the other boy’s who had taste of A grade this season. This group is the future of our club as they are either teenagers or in their early 20’s. I will certainly enjoy watching them play over the next decade or more, they are an outstanding group of young men and they are Southies through and through.
Last and not least our supporters are the best, through good and bad they are there barracking and supporting our teams each weekend. Thank you all
B GRADE COACHES REPORT 2008
I would like to thank all of the 40 players who represented the B grade this year. In one it was a successful year as we made the grand final and in another it was a disappointment that we did not win.
I would especially like to thank those players who did not make the Grand final team – Daniel Brusnahan, Travis Webb and Josh Milera who were there for the most of the year to get us there.
Thanks you to the trainers for being out in the wind and cold to run the water and to Val for keeping the players on the go.
Many thanks also to the under 18s who played up when we were short earlier in the season and those lads who came out of retirement when we needed them Jube and Hey Hey especially.
U/18 2008 REPORT
Premiers, not really much more to say. The season finished the way every team had planned and that was holding up the shield on that day in September.
Our season started with high expectations, following an ordinary season in 07 we were set to keep a lot of that team together and pick up handy acquisitions from our Under 15’s. We organised a trial match vs West before the start of the season and the boys that ran onto the field that night knew that they could be apart of something special.
We started the season with 31-34 registered players, but these numbers eventually deteriorated as players lost interest. The first 5 games saw us sittin equal top spot with West, who at that stage was our only lost. We managed to grab top spot only to let ourselves down with our only loss to a team other than West, Port.
The final round of the season was a chase for the top 2, any one of either us Port or West could have grabbed it. It ended being us and Port grabbing the double chance and the rest is history. We beat Port comfortably in both the Semi and the Grand Final but played no where near our best, but were still too good.
Through out the season we had numerous boys perform great, consistent football and earned the right to play League football. 14 of the 22 players that played in our premiership side played League football in 08. This never really posed a problem as we had great depth still left in the side and were fortunate enough to get U15’s to help out. Some weeks we only had 21-22 players, which goes to show that we don’t just have numbers, but quality numbers coming through our junior ranks.
Outstanding performers in 08 were Ryan Testro who controlled the backline with his ability to read the play. Craig White our tallest player that wanted to win every ball on the ground. Tyson Black consistent performer with great hands down back or up forward. Kahran McKenzie is just pretty to watch. Jaylon Wingfield, Michael Hudson first year players ready to improve upon what the started this year.
Season 08 was a great success for the club and myself, it was my first as a coach and it means a lot to me to say that I have been apart of both the clubs Under 18 Premierships. In 1998 as a player and 2008 as the coach of a group of young men that I hope continue their footy with South and can have the opportunity to play along side them in a League flag………..09?
UNDER 15 REPORT:
South White
The South White team finished 4th this year after to losing to Mark Austin's other South Red team in the first semi final in a close game.
With the 2 teams in Under 15’s this year it was a challenging year for coaches and team numbers from both teams but it was great that we were able to give the lads a game each week and they certainly gained the benefit through improved performances during the year.
Many thanks to the parents Peter Slattery and Cisco Nistico for their assistance as goal umpiring during the year and umpires who assisted including Ryan Struck and Mark Austin and Julie Shirley for washing guernseys each week.
At times the Coaches were frustrated by lack of numbers with a few players lack of commitment and discipline and this must be improved if the lads want to play senior football in the future.
Well done to Tyson Culbertson and Tim Amos who were selected in the Northern zone North Adelaide team during the year.
Many thanks to the under 13’s lads that filled in every week during the year especially Marcus Kerin, Craig Shirley, Jo Boy Waye and Michael Slattery.
Trophy winners in the team were Darryl Hudson, Gary Warren, Nathan Coutts, Reg Nelson and Tom Collins.
Matthew McInnis
South Red
Congratulations must go to the South Red boys for getting to the grand Final unfortunately going down to Centrals in the big one
Thank you to the helpers, Tony Finlay assistant coach and team manager, Mathew McInnis, Mark Shirley, David Williams, Colts committee, Petrina Morse for washing Guernseys, Dion Charlesworth, Trevor white for the players teas and Robert Harvey for umpiring.
My highlights of the year includes coaching the Under 14s Combined Port Augusta squad with 4 players in the North Adelaide Development Squad, Jack Menzies winning the Under 15s medal with 2 other lads and making the grand final.
Trophy winners for the year included Jack Menzies best and fairest, Tim Amos, Lucas Bendessi, Dustin Brauwers, Brandon Charlesworth, Michael Morse and Ben Hilder.
I plan to pursue a senior coaching position next year and take up either a B Grade or Under 18s coach if available. I believe I have enough experience now to convey my knowledge of footy and to teach players what I have been able to achieve.
Lastly it was great to be involved with coaching the Indigenous Port Augusta team to victory in the State Aboriginal carnival which was our first victory in 28 years after being runner up last year.
It was great to see the Under 15s being involved with club events and assisting with the Presentation day, looking forward to pre season in January.
See you next year
Mark Austin
UNDER 13's RED
The Year of 2008 was again another good year for south’s in the under 13’s with enough players to have two sides again and again both teams were very strong and played well all year. The red side taking out the premiership for the 2nd year in a row. It was also again a very enjoying year coaching and couldn’t ask for a better bunch of lads with plenty of ups and not too many downs.
A number of players from both sides played ASPASSA, Darcy Noll after an injury ridded year only playing half the games he finished 3rd in the under 13’s medal Darcy also got the medal for best in grand final.
The Red side finishing 2nd and played the top side ‘The Hawks’ in the 1st final and got over the line to play in the grand final and south white won to play hawks for a spot in the grand final but didn’t quiet get there going down to the hawks so it wasn’t to be a south’s v south’s grand final again. So we played the hawks and played good hard team footy, work hard every quarter and got over the line to be back to back!
But as every coach I cannot take all the credit many thanks to the players who worked hard all year the sponsors and trophy donors without them the season couldn’t of happened, the parents for helping on the hotdog trailer and getting their child to the games, Kym Maule for being team manager and putting up with me all year, Craig Ritter for helping out all year Brock Laube for helping at trainings, Fayne Kaesler for goal umpiring nearly every week. Jack Waterworth, Adam Dipaolo, Jason Dipaolo, Simon McNicol, Darren Strawbridge, Mark Austin and Mark Mckell for field umpiring for the team during the year. My mother for washing the Guernseys every week and one final thank you to Adam Grantham and his South White side with out him and his players South Red couldn’t have achieved what we did and one more thing ad’s don’t give up I am sure you’ll snag one next year bud

UNDER 13’S SOUTH WHITE
This year was a great experience for me being able to coach and be involved with the future of our football club. I would like to congratulate Mark Austin and the under 15’s for making the Grand Final. Unfortunately result didn’t go our way but you have to be in it to win it. Congratulations go to Curls and the South Red side, had an amazing season ultimately finishing with Back to Back premierships. Something you can be very proud of and you proved that champion teams beat individuals. My highlights throughout the year would be watching the boys put things from training into games. It’s very satisfying watching these boys develop and seeing them learning and understanding how to play football. Also watching the Grand Final and seeing Curls boys play a perfect team game. A huge thank you must go out to Grant Ortlepp who assisted me throughout. He was my Team Manager, Water boy, Runner & Assistant coach. You name it he did it. Without him my job would have been extremely difficult. Another massive thankyou goes out to the boys and their parents from Quorn who each Wednesday travelled down for trainings and then backed it up for the games on Saturday. It is very much appreciated and hopefully they can keep on making the journey because our football club will benefit enormously.
