WCRS: A Community Asset Serving Central Ohio

·  WCRS serves the largest metropolitan area (reaching over 1 million residents) in the U.S. as a low power FM radio station.

  • WCRS is Central Ohio's only Pacifica network affiliate, broadcasting Democracy Now! and other Pacifica network programming. Three locally produced programs are now broadcast on other Pacifica affiliate stations.

·  WCRS offers unique locally produced programming. Highlights include:

·  Multiple programs featuring local music/musicians, celebrating Columbus' voice as a musical/cultural powerhouse

·  Locally produced talk and public affairs programs focusing on issues important to the Columbus Community

  • 7 hr/wk of Somali language broadcasts to the second largest Somali community in the U.S. WCRS is the only Central Ohio media source penetrating the Central Ohio Somali population, possibly exceeding 80,000 people. This is a very important community resource because the population overwhelmingly does not speak or read English.

·  WCRS is a Volunteer-run operation with volunteer opportunities in program production, DJ, audio production, tech and web, studio operations, event planning, fundraising, marketing and more! In 2009 more than 50 volunteers contributed 9000+ hours of service, valued at $174,600.

WCRS is a non-commercial, listener-supported community radio station serving Central Ohioans, providing quality programming to:

  • Promote personal and civic responsibility, informed action and thoughtful living
  • Represent under-served and under-represented constituencies and viewpoints, and to provide news and information not commonly found elsewhere on the airwaves
  • Challenge cultural and intellectual assumptions
  • Celebrate local cultures
  • Air alternative points of view and facilitate understanding through dialogue
  • Train citizens in media production and foster community empowerment and participation

The Neighborhood Network is the license holder of WCRS and a 501(c)3 organization. All contributions to WCRS are payable to The Neighborhood Network and are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
