Opticalcamouflageisakindofactivecamouflagewhichcompletely envelopes the wearer.Itdisplaysanimage of the scene onthe side opposite the viewer onit, sothat theviewercan"seethrough" thewearer, rendering thewearerinvisible.Theideais relatively straightforward:tocreatetheillusionofinvisibility bycoveringanobjectwith somethingthatprojectsthescenedirectly behindthatobject.Ifyouprojectbackground image ontothe maskedobject, youcanobserve the maskedobjectjustasif itwere virtuallytransparent.

Opticalcamouflage canbe appliedfor a realscene.Inthe case of a realscene,a photographofthesceneistakenfromtheoperator’sviewpoint, andthis photographis projectedtoexactlythesameplaceastheoriginal.Actually,applyingHMP-basedoptical camouflagetoa real scene requires image-based renderingtechniques.

Whilenew high-performance, light-transmittingmaterialssuchas aerogelandlight-transmittingconcrete compelus toquestionthe nature of solidity, anewtechnology developedbyUniversity ofTokyoseekstomake matter disappear altogether.

ScientistsatTachiLaboratory havedevelopedOpticalCamouflage, whichutilizesacollectionof devicesworkinginconcerttorenderasubject invisible.AlthoughmoreencumberingandcomplicatedthanHarry Potter’s invisibilitycloak,thissystem hasessentially thesamegoal,rendering invisibilitybyslipping beneaththe shining,silverycloth.

OpticalCamouflage requiresthe use of clothing–inthiscase,a hoodedjacket–madewitharetro-reflectivematerial,whichiscomprised bythousandsofsmallbeadsthatreflectlightpreciselyaccordingtothe angle of incidence.Adigital videocameraplacedbehind thepersonwearing thecloakcapturesthescenethattheindividualwouldotherwiseobstruct, andsendsdatatoacomputerfor processing.A sophisticatedprogram calculatestheappropriate distanceandviewingangle, andthentransmits sceneviaprojectorusingacombiner, orahalfsilveredmirrorwithan opticalhole, whichallowsawitnesstoperceivearealistic mergerofthe projected scenewith the background– thusrenderingthecloak-wearer invisible.
