Our raffles are successful because we have the support of a large group of FHRPC members. Your executive committee would like to say thanks to the following salesmen (listed in no particular order). Without help from a large portion of our membership, this raffle would not have been successful. Please accept our apology if we have mistakenly omitted your name from the list. 100+ members out there pushing tickets make our raffle a winner.

Special thanks are due to a few folks who worked extra hard for the club on the day of the big raffle in support of both the raffle activity and the associated shooting matches. Dave Shaffer pulled raffle tickets and posted winners. Mark Vantyne ran the match registration table. Jim Soulsby and Frank Snyder fired up the grill and did a fine job burning tube steaks. Dan Webster, Fred Kreiger, and Jon Eastham ran the muzzleloader match. Dave Thompson ran the highpower match. Joe Lechliter, Jack Snyder, Terry Barnes, John Dowell, George Sneathen, Gene Sneathen, Gary Dawson, Jack Parrill, and Frank Snyder donated a bit of their time to serve as target pullers for the highpower match. Mike Carney donated a fine hand-made hunting knife to the club that was raffled away to match participants.

DETER TAKES LEAD IN MUZZLELOADER COMPETITION

Ron Deter ran away from the rest of the field in our raffle-day muzzleloader match, posting a score of 47 out of 50 possible points. Terry Mulligan and Marvin Smith earned second and third place. Both men posted scores of 40. Mulligan edged out Smith with a closest-ball-to-center tiebreaker.

Deter fired the new Savage, model ML2, in-line, 50-caliber, muzzleloading rifle. Deter’s rifle was topped with a Weaver 3-10X scope, and loaded with 300-grain, 45-caliber, Hornady XTP pistol bullets with MMP sabots. His powder of choice is Hogdon’s Lil’ Gun – and a lot of it. We couldn’t get Ron to tell us his powder load. His comment, when asked about how much Lil’ Gun, was, “A lot!” We’ll interpret that to mean a whole bunch. So, if you go after Deter’s performance with his materials, work up on the load cautiously.

Recall, the raffle-day muzzleloader match is 5 shots for record, in a 20-minute time limit, at the NRA A25 100-yard smallbore target. Cash awards of $100, $75, and $50 are given to first-, second-, and third-place finishers, respectively. Terry Mulligan was the match winner in both 2003 and 2004. Mulligan is a hard holder and shoots a traditional muzzleloading hammer gun. All competitors are welcome in this match. The only big restriction on equipment is your muzzleloader must be legal for Maryland deer hunting. Modern in-line rifles with telescopic sights are allowed, as are the traditional hammer guns. A brief summary of our first three years of competition is shown in the following table.

YEAR / 2003 / 2004 / 2005
TOP THREE SHOOTERS (SCORE) / 1ST / TERRY MULLIGAN (45) / TERRY MULLIGAN (42) / RON DETER (47)
2ND / RON DETER (41) / RON DETER (40) / TERRY MULLIGAN (40)
3RD / DAN WEBSTER (40) / JOHN DOWELL (39) / MARVIN SMITH (40)

LEWIS WINS BACK HIGHPOWER CROWN

Bill Lewis fended off three tough competitors to win the raffle-day highpower match with a score of 100-8X. We had a four-way tie for the top spot this year, with Dan James, Wayne Conner, and Terry Barnes also posting scores of 100-8X. Lewis dispatched the other competitors with a near perfect score of 98 on the shoot-off tiebreaker.

Lewis fired a Remington model 40X custom-shop rifle chambered for the 6MM Remington cartridge. Lewis used Winchester cases, loaded with 38.0 grains of IMR-4064 powder, and primed with Federal Gold Medal match primers. According to Lewis, this load pushed his 75-grain Sierra hollow-point flat-base bullet at 3100 ft/sec. Lewis prefers Weaver scopes, using a Weaver target model 24X for his big win on October 9.

The FHRPC raffle-day highpower match is 2 sighter shots and 10 shots fired for record, in a 20-minute time limit, at the NRA MR63 300-yard target. Like the muzzleloader match, cash awards of $100, $75, and $50 are given to first-, second-, and third-place finishers, respectively. Lewis has finished in one of the top-three positions in each of our first three matches. Last year, Terry Barnes posted our only perfect score, 100-10X. This year, 21 of the 55 individual matches cleaned the target with X counts ranging from 3X to 8X. The competition is getting tough. A summary of our first three years of competition is shown in the following table.

FHRPC SPONSORS HUNTER SAFETY COURSE

The FHRPC, in conjunction with the Maryland (MD) Department of Natural Resources (DNR), is sponsoring a Hunter Safety Course on Saturday and Sunday, November 12 and 13. Wayne Belloff is our Hunter Safety Team chairman. Call Wayne Belloff at 301-722-6859 if you would like to volunteer for the Hunter Safety Instructor Team. This is a great opportunity to support the FHRPC and the future generation of hunters in Maryland. Plus, it’s a great for the FHRPC to get MD DNR support. Sponsoring these Hunter Safety courses makes the FHRPC eligible for range improvement grant from the MD DNR.

The Warrior Mountain 100-meter will be closed from 9 AM to 2 PM on Sunday, November 13, to support the live-fire portion of this class.

2005 ENDS WITH SIGHT-IN DAYS

Our yearly club activities end with Sight-In Days. We have scheduled Sight-In Days for three weekends in November, just before the start of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia rifle seasons for whitetail deer. The FHRPC offers this annual event as a community service to assist local deer hunters in zeroing their rifle sights. The Sight-In Days schedule is shown in the following table. Please call Ken Fuller at 301-724-5254 if you would like to volunteer for the Sight-In Team. Lunch will be supplied to club members working at the event.

VOLUNTEERS SUPPORT WORK PARTIES

All FHRPC ranges were closed on Saturday, September 10, for maintenance. We owe our thanks to the following folks for volunteering to support the maintenance activities: Ken Fuller, Charlie Knippenburg, Barry Fickes, Dave Durst, Jon Eastham, Frank Snyder, Jim Soulsby, Dave Thompson, Mark Kane, Wayne Stott, Sylvester Schultz, and Gary Dawson. These guys gave some of their valuable time so that we all have a nicer place to shoot.

CMP M1903A3 RIFLES ALMOST GONE

M1903A3 Springfield rifles from the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) will soon be a thing of the past. The CMP inventory is down to about 1000 M1903A3 rifles manufactured by Remington. At the present rate of sales, they will be sold out in three months. If you have been considering buying one, now is the time to jump. FHRPC members get a 10% discount if they purchase CMP rifles through the club. Contact Dave Thompson at 304-788-1346, for more information.

FHRPC CLASS OF 2005 IS HUGE

Fifty-nine new members joined the FHRPC in August, 2005. The new members are listed in the following table. Please offer your assistance if you observe any member, new or old, struggling with range procedures. Help them do the right thing and shoot safely.

The Class of 2005 is the largest annual membership increase in our 61-year history. The increase resulted from regular members graduating to life membership, normal membership turnover, and the vote to increase our regular membership limit by 50 at the last annual meeting. Recall, our regular membership limit now stands at 350. The club roster is now 441 names long, including 72 life members, 24 police officers, and 2 soldiers working full-time for Uncle Sam. So, our regular membership list contains 343 names. There are 27 names on the membership waiting list.

We encourage the new folks to get to know other members. They may ask to see your membership card. If you see an unfamiliar face at the range, you should ask to see their membership card.
