Description of Service
Forensic mental health assessment and rehabilitation. All aspects of mental health provision to mentally disordered offenders or others displaying similar behaviours. Services include pre-admission assessment, in-patient treatment and aftercare.
SCOTT CLINIC - MEDIUM SECURE UNIT
The Scott Clinic [named after the late Dr Peter Scott, Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist], is purpose built Medium Secure Unitfor 56 patients located in five wards whose functions are defined as:
Ivy Ward-Admission/Rehabilitation (men)
Hawthorn Ward-Admission/Rehabilitation (men)
Olive Ward-Low dependency/Pre-discharge (men)
Myrtle Ward-Rehabilitation (men)
Poplar Ward-Admission/Rehabilitation (women)
In addition, Reed Lodge is a 12 bed step-down ward located within the grounds of the Scott Clinic.
Setting where work will be carried out
  • Most of thetrainee’s work will be carried out at Scott Clinic Medium Secure Unit
  • The trainee will have the opportunity to assess forensic referrals from General Adult Psychiatry under Consultant supervision, or from prisons.
  • The trainee will undertake clinical assessment at HMP Liverpool or HMP Altcourse on a regular basis.
General Overview of Training Experience
There will be an expectation that you attend local postgraduate teaching programmes, as well as specific programmes that are available.
  • Hospital Teaching Program
  • Opportunities exist to attend Academic meetings
  • Individual supervision – weekly 1 hour by Dr. Noblett
  • Opportunities exist for training by the Clinical Psychologist team in assessment and treatment of sexual offending.
  • Opportunities exist to teach medical students and other clinical observers attached to Dr.Noblett.
  • Opportunities to gain knowledge of Mental Health Act (1983) and Mental Capacity Act (2005).
  • Opportunity and supervision is available to undertake an audit project.
Responsibilities of Trainee
  • Assessment and management of service users within a medium secure hospital setting.
  • Assessment of referrals from General Adult Psychiatry of individuals in other in-patient settings or in the community.
  • Involvement in multi-agency risk management planning as necessary.
  • Regular input into local prisons for assessment and management of individuals with mental health problems.
  • Emergency assessment of individuals referred from police custody or in the community.
