18th Company USNA ’64 “Flower” Fund
We, as 18th Company classmates from the United States Naval Academy Class of 1964, desire to extend a tangible measure of our sympathy as company-mates to the wives and/or families of our deceased 18th Company classmates.
A. The proposal is to establish an 18th Company USNA ’64 “Flower” Fund. On the occasion of the death of a company-mate, the administrator of the fund will send a memorial gift, either a floral wreath/spray or a charitable donation (if requested by the family) with a value of about $125. The administrator will include a sympathy note in the name of all 18th Company USNA ’64 Classmates.
B. The administrators of the fund would be our company-mates, Bill Carson and Al Creal. Both Bill and Al live in the Hampton Roads area and have agreed to administer the fund.
C. The “Flower” Fund contributions will be held in a joint USAA Checking Account in the names of Bill Carson and Al Creal. This account will require no balance and will incur no check writing or other service charges.
a. Initial contributions to the “Flower” Fund by 18th company-mates will be voluntary and by check in the suggested amount of $20 each. Checks would be paid to the order of “18th Company USNA ’64 Flower Fund” and mailed to Bill Carson, 921 Queen Elizabeth Dr, Virginia Beach VA 23452.
b. Records of those classmates who do, or do not, contribute will remain with the administrators only.
c. Recipients of memorial gifts would be any deceased company-mate, regardless of whether or not he contributed to the fund.
d. The total of initial contributions should be about $700, if each company-mate on the email distribution list contributes $20.
e. When memorial gifts deplete the “Flower” Fund to about $200, the administrators will solicit additional contributions from company-mates.
f. The first withdrawal from the fund would be $125 to reimburse Chuck Higgins and Bill Carson for the wreath that they sent for the 12/15/2010 memorial service/funeral for Billy B. Williams.
g. The inscription on the note to Billy’s wife, Rosemary, read: “With our deepest sympathy from your 18th Company Naval Academy Classmates”.
h. The wording on subsequent inscriptions for deceased company-mates would be similar the one for Billy.
i. A second withdrawal would be for $25 to reimburse Bill Carson for cost of setting up the joint USAA checking account.
D. The floral wreaths would be purchased from FTD Flowers with a 25% discount through USAA (usaa.com/flowers).
E. Examples of the FTD floral wreaths can be viewed at http://www.ftd.com/5970/catalog/category.epl?index_id=occasion_sympathy_forservice_sprayswreaths .
F. Reports by the administrators will include:
a. The canceled checks from company-mates to the Flower Fund will serve as the receipt of their contributions.
b. Our company representative will forward an email to all company-mates when a memorial gift is given from the “Flower” Fund;
c. Our company representative will forward an email to all company-mates with a short financial report at the end of each calendar year.
G. Notes: The proposal outlined above is a complement to the “64 Cares Program” (see USNA64.com). As such, company-mates are encouraged to:
a. When possible, represent the Class of 64 by attending funerals and memorial services for classmates and
b. Send individual condolences to the spouse and/or family of decreased classmates.
c. Notify our company representative, Bob McClure, if you hear of the death, or serious illness, of a classmate. Bob will pass this information to our class president, Bill Natter, who will get the word to all classmates.
