WAKEFIELD COMMUNITY SCHOOL

JUNIOR HIGH AND SENIOR HIGH

2011-2012 BAND HANDBOOK

DIRECTOR: MR. BILL TRENHAILE

The purpose of this handbook is to explain and inform all band-members and their parents/guardians of the following items; philosophy of music, class expectations, grading policy, jr. high lessons, contest, lettering, eligibility, accessories/school owned instruments, and schedule of events.

PHILOSOPHY OF MUSIC

My philosophy of music is based on the TEAM principle – “Together Everyone Achieves More.” I believe that any group activities are TEAM activities where everyone participates and contributes to the success of the group. As a TEAM our main goal is to function as one unit – one unit that has the opportunity to create and perform something new, exciting and great every day.

DISCIPLINE

The following governing principle will be used in matters concerning day to day discipline.

YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU WANT IN THIS CLASS -

PROVIDED IT DOES NOT CAUSE A PROBLEM FOR ANYONE ELSE.

The Wakefield Community School Junior and Senior High band will also be governed by the guidelines set up in the Wakefield Community School Student Handbook.

CLASS EXPECTATIONS

1.  Everyone will begin practices and performances in a timely manner.

2.  Everyone will be attentive, cooperative, and mannerly during rehearsals and performances.

3.  Everyone will be respectful of school and each other’s equipment and materials.

GRADING POLICY

Students’ grades will be figured in the following manner with students being able to receive up to the maximum points listed in each category.

Weekly Grade 30% of total grade (Homework). Once a week students will be given the opportunity to self assess their performance for the week through the use of a grading rubric worth 25 points. Mr. Trenhaile will complete the same rubric and combine the points for the students’ weekly grade.

Music Fundamentals Grade 30 - % of total grade (Quiz). Throughout each quarter students will be evaluated on objectives presented in class. These may include but are not limited to playing selected passages, scales, music theory, vocabulary, care of instrument, and marching techniques.

Performance Grade 30 – % of total grade (Test). Students will receive points for performances - pep band (up to 50 points per performances), marching band (up to 100 points per performance), concert band (100 per points performance), and contest (up to 100 points per contest). The performance grade will be figured by taking the number of points the student has received divided by the number of points offered. Performance Grade Requirements – All marching band and concert band performances are required and graded. However, conflict with the scheduled marching band and concert band performances may occur. When this happens, communication between the parents and the instructor is vital. In these cases, absences will be excused on a case-by-case basis. Unexcused absences include skipping a marching band or concert band performance, or any other absence not covered by an “excused” absence. Work is considered an unexcused absence. Excused absences included illness from school that day, school related activities scheduled on the same day, or sudden emergency, accident, or illness.

Additional Opportunities Grade 10% of total grade (Project) All students in the Wakefield community Junior or Senior High Band are capable of receiving an “A” grade in band. In order for students to receive an “A” grade, they need to accomplish two of items from the list below.
