Trees for Life - context

The core purpose of Trees for Life (TfL) is to restore the Caledonian Forest and all its constituent species of flora and fauna to the Scottish Highlands. By engaging volunteers to do this, TfL aims to provide a powerful and educational experience that will promote the work of restoration to wider audiences. Through providing a demonstration of the techniques of ecological restoration, TfL aims to inspire similar projects elsewhere in the UK and around the world.

Overall purpose of the job

The purpose of thisrole is to manage a two-year project that will enable more private landowners to manage Caledonian pinewood remnants on their land. The role will focus on understanding the barriers to the management of pinewood remnants from the perspective of the people who own and manage the pinewoods. The project will also seek to identify pinewood remnants that are not currently on Caledonian Pinewood Inventory and begin to show how these can bolster the scale and health of Scotland’s overall pinewood habitat resource.

Scope, Accountability and Resources

  • The scope of the job is tomanage the CPR Project, ensuring that work is delivered on-time and on-budget.
  • The scope includes responsibility for the delivery of the analysis of barriers to management of pinewoods by private estates and to liaise with other TfL staff, FCS and SNH Officers) to enable pinewoods to be brought into management.
  • Accountable for budget, project delivery and staff management
  • Accountable to TfL Conservation Manager and a Project Steering Group including representatives from Woodland Trust Scotland, Scottish Land & Estates, FCS and SNH.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and manage a project plan to ensure that the key outcomes are achieved.
  • Managing the project budget.
  • Managing the Project Officer.
  • Reporting on progress and seeking advice and support from the Project Steering Group.
  • Oversee the project’s relationships with WTS, FCS and SNH staff on the ground.
  • Communicate with pinewood owners and managers to engage their interest in the project and develop a relationship with them as their pinewood assessment and management report is completed.
  • Production of barrier analysis and other communications outputs.
  • Internal liaison to ensure contacts with estates seeking to manage their pinewoods are supported and plans developed with them.
  • Internal liaison to maximise traditional and social media exposure of the project.
  • Give presentations and attend relevant conference and workshops.

General

  • Any other reasonable request for work from the TfL Conservation Manager or CEO commensurate with the role.
  • Reasonably regular unsocial hours, including evening and occasional weekends.

Knowledge & Expertise

  • Project management

  • Degree in a related subject?
  • Knowledge of the Scottish forestry grants system.
  • Understanding of Scottish land use issues and an ability to empathise with different points of view on land management.
