Use the following questions as a guide for your peer responding. Remember that these are suggestions to get you started: do not feel you have to answer every question here, ad conversely do not limit yourself to answering only the questions here. The purpose of the peer response is to provide feedback to help your classmates improve their papers, so any and all constructive criticism is welcome. Have fun and don’t hesitate to ask questions!
Identify the author’s slant. (remember: slant = how the advertisers are attempting to sell their product – what is their game? What gimmick are they using?) Is the slant clear? Is it logical?
Identify the author’s dominant impression, with textual evidence to support your claims. Does the dominant impression you identified match the author’s intended dominant impression? Why or why not?
Does the author present all elements of his or her analysis with consistency? Do any elements feel out of place? Do any elements feel “lacking,” as if there was more to say about them?
Does the author provide sufficient evidence to support his or her claims? Are there claims that could use more support? Are there claims that are over-supported?
Do the author’s evaluations display deep thinking and insight? Are there places where you were left to ask, “Why did he or she mention that?” or “That’s obvious – tell me something I don’t already know” or any similar questions? If so, what suggestions can you make to help the author avoid these shortcomings?
