African Voices 2013

Activity days delivered by African Post-Graduate Students

Perceptions of Africa

Young people’s perceptions of Africa are strongly influenced by the Charity advertisements; news stories about the continent; and exotic wildlife and cultural television programmes about Africa.

Over 75% of 9 -11 year olds think there is little food in Africa.

‘When you see Red Nose Day you see loads of pictures of people starving’

Over 65% of 9 -11 year olds think there are no skyscrapers in Africa.

‘I thought it was like what you see on the news – straw huts and fighting’

Over 70% of 9 -11 year olds think that people in Africa do not use mobile phones.

‘I thought all people were poor and they didn’t have any technology’

A Balanced Perspective

Over the past seven years African PG students, trained by LUCAS, have delivered over 170 African Voices activity days in 70 primary schools. The students are professionals, highly educated, positive role models and ambassadors for Africa. They offer your pupils a first-hand perspective on the diversity of the continent and present a more positive and balanced view of Africa and its peoples.

African Voices Days

An African Voices day consists of a programme of activities that challenge existing perceptions; explore contemporary development issues; take a closer look at the student’s own country; and engage pupils in cultural activities. They are available for Year 5 & 6 pupils from February to July 2013 at a cost of £150 per class. This year the first 20 bookings are being subsidised by the Leeds University Africa College and are available at a reduced cost of £60 per class.
