Transition to School Program

The ‘Little Learners’ Transition to School Program is play-based, aiming to provide interesting, educational and enjoyable experiences for your child. The program will occur within a disciplined learning environment so that children develop academically, physically, socially and creatively. Your child will be encouraged to develop a readiness for skills associated with writing, reading and mathematics.

The benefits of transition for the children from the ‘Little Learners’ class to the kindergarten class are:

·  a sensitive, smooth transition into school for all students;

·  familiarity and security with surroundings;

·  sense of belonging;

·  prior knowledge of the school and staff;

·  play and planned curriculum continue to meet children’s developmental needs;

·  early identification of children with learning difficulties and/ or special needs enabling us to access support for children to ensure their needs are catered for.

Session Location and Times

The ‘Little Learners’ program will operate:

·  on Tuesday each week from 1:30pm to 3:00pm and runs for six weeks beginning Tuesday 30 August 2016.

·  within the grounds and buildings of Corowa Public School.

·  with professional early childhood staff conducting the program.

Delivering and Collecting the Children

The session starts at 1:30pm and finishes at 3:00pm. As the staff will be involved in other school duties, parents are requested to deliver children at 1:30pm and collect their child/children promptly at 3:00pm.

On the first day meet our staff and school captains near the office at the administration block. They will escort you to the Kindergarten rooms where the class will begin each week.

To enable a successful transition, parents/caregivers are advised to leave their child for the duration of the class.

For reasons of safety, a parent, carer or other responsible adult must sign the on/off sheet and must bring and collect the children from the program located in the Kindergarten classrooms.

Please let staff know if your child is to be collected by any person other than a parent. Children will not be permitted to leave the program with any person who does not have the parent’s permission and who is unknown to the staff.

Clothing

Please dress your child in play clothes. Clothing needs to be comfortable, washable and easy to manage when your child uses the toilet.

Please make sure that any items of clothing that your child removes while attending the session are clearly named.

What to bring to the ‘Little Learners’ Class

·  A named backpack or carry bag for carrying belongings to and from the session. Each child will have a place for bags, jackets etc.

·  A hat with your child’s name on it.

·  An afternoon snack in a named container and a named drink bottle or container of water.

·  A change of clothes to be kept in your child’s bag – this is handy if children get wet or have an accident.
