1. President’s Welcome

The President welcomed everyone to the meeting by stating that after a good summer the club had returned to its core business, coaching and playing cricket.

The President added that it had been a privilege to watch the club’s management team at work during the year and that the club was fortunate to have a forward thinking and professional team.

2. Apologies for Absence

Apologies for absence were received from: David Lloyd, Wyatt Ramsdale & Carlo Bruno

3. Minutes of the 2012 AGM

There being no questions or matter arising, the minutes of the 2012 AGM were approved and signed. (Proposed by Paul Brook, Seconded by Tim Wheatley). Carried by a show of hands

4. Chairman’s Report

Wow how quickly has this first year gone; it only seems like yesterday that I was being elected in as Chair. Although I was briefed in what was entailed, until you actually get your hands dirty you never really know.

What I learnt very quickly “ Is the behind the scenes work” that people don’t get to see or realise, the dedication people give to get this fantastic club to get 4 seniors teams, a ladies and full youth teams out each week amazes me. This is before we even mention the other jobs, like preparing wickets, the social events & Friday nights, the bar & all the paperwork that goes with it to make it safe for all to enjoy.

So I set myself 2 objectives when I took this role on: - I called it “back to basics”

1)To listen & learn in what we had at Rowledge & to play cricket - making sure everyone enjoyed playing or watching it regardless of the age.

2)To take stock on our finances, regroup and replenish our funds due to the wettest season last year.

I/we achieved both these with the help of many people so I would like to thank a few a people for making my role a lot easier to get up to speed:-

1)Thanks to you all

  1. Firstly my fellow management team, I thank you all for your support advice and input this year your efforts have been much appreciated to settle me in.
  2. Bill Nicholls for always being at the end of the phone/email if I had any questions about the job. I believe they have got less as the year as progressed.
  3. Then there are the coaches, skippers, scorers and umpires and everyone else who has volunteered this year.
  4. The Sponsors – times are hard but all the of them for making an effort after such a wet season, especially to our new principal sponsors Burns & Webber (Dan) – Senior & junior teams , Southern Properties (Michelle) – the ladies and girls, Brolly Refurbishments (Michelle & Pete) – Presidents Day & Forest Lodge – membership cards

SSE – where we got a new bowling machine & funding 4 new coaches in our youth section.

All of them have given money as well as support to our club in many ways which gives us the stability short term & to build for the future.

I need to give a special thanks to David Metcalfe, who after many years will be standing down as Hon secretary. We will be splitting the role into two, Non cricket & Cricket & I am overjoyed that he has agreed to continue as cricket sec for the time being.

I would like to thank Tim Wheatley who has been Senior cricket officer for the last 2 years – not an easy job to keep all senior players happy.

Sarah Tehan – has also decided to stand down as Bar Manager she has done a fantastic job and I wish her well for the future. Lastly but not forgotten Pete Dickenson who will be standing down as Hon Auditor.

2)Finances

I won’t dwell on these as Lenka will tell us more, but I can say it was a lot better than last year….. we had more sponsorship in number of companies which in turn leads to actual hard cash. We had sun so this meant busier Friday nights, Jazz night, sweets, BBQ and don’t forget David Lloyd’s race nights.

Lenka has been working overtime on a couple of important topics over the last few months as well as doing the year end accounts, so we can have the AGM in Dec not January, So on behalf of the club I would like thank her for this and I am sure she will touch on those new exciting topics on how they will benefit the club.

3)Playing facilities

Tony Field & Chris Yates once again did a fantastic job in getting over 100 games played at The Rec & Binsted the hard work they put in showed in our recent results from the league where our wicket and outfield were vastly improved on 2012.

Binsted lived up to its reputation buts its improving YoY, (I leant this on my first game for the casuals

v 4ths when bowled 2nd ball as I walked off I remember Jon Wills shouting out “welcome to Binsted.“

Holt pound was put out to grass this year (literally) and will do so until BPC spend money on the outfield. We had U11 at Tilford for the first time which I hear from Simon and parents that it was brilliant to be on such a picturesque venue & I am pleased that we have gained it again for next year.

So you all would have noticed that work has begun at the Rec to move the square towards Fullers Road, Kestral the contractors started in Sept & this will be done over 2 years, we have swapped the work schedule around so this year we moved 5/6 wickets with the remaining and the drainage being done in 2014. This year work has been completed and Tony is happy, it does mean we are working on finding alternative grounds for 2014, as we will only have the 1s & 2s & ladies on the Rec due to the number of wickets available.

4)New Events

Rec hosted two charitable events this year one a bank holiday cricket match & the other a fun family day, all in aid of Breakthrough Breast Cancer where a member and his friend is rowing across the Atlantic as we speak. Both days were blessed by the sun, and both were huge success, especially the cricket one, which consisted of parents from each year at Rowledge against each other. We hope we can do another similar event next year.

5)The Teams

Junior section

Once again Rowledge fielded a record number teams from U9 – U17 some ages fielding more than one team and I hope we can do this again in 2014. Peter also had the mammoth task in putting together tons of paperwork to ensure we kept our club mark, a& I felt for him when Sharon turned up to mark us on the first Fri night which I thought was a little cruel. We only had one Friday night cancelled which in turns means our youngsters get to learn cricket and in turn the parents get to enjoy the social side – BBQ & Bar, which both up on previous years.

Our youth is one of the best around locally which really cements our future for senior teams. Neil & Dave once again delivered on coaching and I am proud to announce that due to their efforts and with our junior’s coaches we put forward our highest record of entries to District & County trials with around 50% success rate across all age’s groups. I hope now in the 2nd year the academy and with the new bowling machine we can improve again next year.

Senior teams –

Ladies – had a tough year in the Hampshire league but also entered in the Surrey Trust league (a T20 format) and with new sponsors and shirts the young girls showed real enthusiasm & potential and will continue again in 2014, this will form a stop gap as we rebuild our ladies section, and we have many good young girls coming through. So thank you - Katie Forward.

1XI – Thank you to Ricky Yates for taking on the role in the absence of David Lloyd and unfortunately we got relegated on the last game of the season, this was down to injuries, retirements, and basically not performing to our full potential. It was a wakeup call and I hope we can bounce straight back next year.

2XI – Ben Wish & the boys did very well & managed to survive in County 1, with good performances from of our U17 players stepping up in to senior cricket. Near the end of the season it was good to see our long serving 1st team captain back in the middle with both bat and ball.

3XI – Carlo Bruno managed to bring them home mid table and were unlucky not to finish higher, he once again worked well as a team to assist the 2nd and 4th in getting 4 teams out each week.

4XI – Once again Jon Wills has worked his magic to put out a team each week, he worked closely with Carlo to get the best side he could out, and had many U15 team members coming in to show their potential, he was excellent at making sure they get to bat & bowl so to keep them interested. He did have to call on Paul and myself one w/e, not sure if we actually helped & it was discussed “when was the last time a President and Chairman were in the same side.

Finally

I would like to finish on one thing that I have noticed this year! As chair I have attended a lot of meetings internally and externally for the club. Some may say too many but I chose to do this but

What I have taken away and I think this is forgotten far too easily by many members:- from senior cricket players to parents in the junior section that they take our club for granted. What I mean by this they turn up play, drop off, or watch then just go home, they don’t take stock of what Rowledge cricket is all about:-

  • A club with great history
  • A well run club, one of the best around with what facilities we have.
  • Same old dedicated volunteers who put massive amount of effort each week.
  • A club that plays at a very high level locally

So I urge you please go away tonight, take stock of what you have done last year, be honest with yourself and think what could you do next year, maybe this is telling the committee a great new idea or volunteering to do one of the many vacant positions we have, because if we don’t get new people and the long serving ones go then the club will go backwards not forward.

So I thank you for your support in 2013 and look forward to next year.
