OCCASIONAL NOTES
Two thirds of the way down on the second page:
THE VICEROY’S MOVEMENTS. – His Excel-
ency the Viceroy, we learn, intends to spend
about six weeks only in the tour now started.
An earlier movement would have been
better advised, for now the general appear-
ance of the land after the showers will
hardly give Lord Lytton an adequate idea
of what the distress is , unless Mr. Saunders
takes him to some of the Relief Houses to see
the sad specimens of emaciated humanity
therein. The Foreign Secretary accom-
panies His Excellency, and all urgent mat-
ters are to be addressed to the Governor
General’s camp.

The decorations at the railway station, which went ahead in spite of the famine, after the orders had been given and countermanded three times. Many plants, red carpet , triumphal arch, coats of arms, etc.
Waiting for his Excellency: there was a one and half hour delay because another train had broken down and blocked the line.
The arrival. The train stopped a few yards short of the red carpet. The band struck up God save the Queen and there was a 31 gun salute.
