The city of Pergamum was known as an intellectual center. It had a 200,000 volume library and a medical center. We get our English word “scalpel” from the pagan Greek god of medicine named Aesculapius. One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the great altar of Zeus (possible reason for reference to Satan’s throne) was located there.
