Sample instruction card (Appendix 1)
Instruction Cards A - E for each group of learners
Procedure:
1. Teacher goes through with learners some prepositions / prepositional phrases to indicate directions, using the classroom as a context. Teacher asks learners to follow his/her instructions (e.g. Walk along the first row and you will find a book at the end of the row. / Walk to the back of the classroom from the teacher’ s desk. / Take the right of the corridor from the classroom.) in order to familiarize them with the task later on.
2. Teacher observes and sees whether learners are ready for the next step. Then, teacher shows learners the map.
3. Teacher guides learners to read aloud the vocabulary such as names of streets, buildings and places as seen on the map.
4. Teacher guides learners to follow the first set of instructions (Appendix 1) to trace the routes on the map and asks questions to check locations.
5. Learners work in groups of 4 and are given a set of Instruction Cards (A - E).
6. Then, learners take turns to read aloud the instructions on the cards and ask their members questions to check locations.
7. Group members listen and trace the routes on their maps and tell the locations.
Adaptation:
For a more advanced stage, learners create their own sequences of instructions based on simple daily activities (e.g. opening a bank account, buy film tickets)
