Driesenga & Associates, Inc. is looking for a Survey Group Manager in our Holland and or Kalamazoo office.A client-focused position for a Licensed Professional Surveyor. Utilizing your superior associate and client relations skills, you will plan, direct, and coordinate the work of survey parties and related staff engaged in surveying earth's surface and preparing reports and legal descriptions of land

Education/Experience

Bachelor or Master’s Degree in Surveying, GIS and/or related experience. Professional Surveyor license required. Must have ability to work well in a team environment and manage own projects with little oversight. Must have 5 years of increasing experience as a Crew/Party Chief and or Survey Project Manager and understand the project management process. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license within acceptable criteria.

Skills, Abilities and Knowledge

Knowledge of basic and complex surveying and engineering concepts. Knowledge of local zoning ordinances and general municipal procedures for establishing legal descriptions of land. Knowledge of project management practices. Knowledgeable in the operation of survey equipment, including but not limited to total stations, data collectors and GPS. Demonstrates knowledge and expertise in a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. Intermediate skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, AutoCAD, etc. Skill in analyzing information and exercising sound judgment in making decisions. Skill in writing wide range of reports, letters, and other documentation with a high degree of accuracy. Skill to properly retain and dispense confidential information. Ability to deal in a sensitive and professional manner with a wide range of employees, clients & vendors. Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships with both internal and external business partners. Ability to effectively communicate verbally and manually (phone, e-mail, written correspondence, public presentations to municipal agencies and commissions). Ability to take and follow through on directions. Ability to direct and follow-up with subordinates. Ability to research and understand various zoning and survey requirements as dictated by municipal code. Ability to learn, understand and utilize surveying technology and terminology. Ability to learn and utilize new techniques and equipment.

  • Plans, directs, and coordinates activities of designated project to ensure that goals or objectives of project are accomplished within prescribed time frame and funding parameters by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors.
  • Directs survey parties and projects, and reviews and certifies completed work to satisfy legal requirements.
  • Writes or directs the writing of descriptions of land to satisfy legal requirements.
  • Appears as expert witness in court in cases involving land or boundary disputes.
  • Monitors new technology, and evaluates and purchases or authorizes purchase of new equipment and supplies.
  • Researches previous survey evidence, maps, deeds, physical evidence, and other records to obtain data needed for surveys.
  • Develops new data from photogram metric records.
  • Coordinates findings with work of engineering personnel, clients, and others concerned with project.
  • Creates timely project proposals and budgets based on clients request for proposals.
  • Reviews project proposal or plan to determine time frame, funding limitations, procedures for accomplishing project, staffing requirements, and allotment of available resources to various phases of project.
  • Establishes work plan/budget and staffing for each phase of project, and arranges for recruitment or assignment of project personnel.
  • Confers with project staff to outline work plan/budget and to assign duties, responsibilities, and scope of authority.
  • Directs and coordinates activities of project personnel to ensure project progresses on schedule and within prescribed budget.
  • Reviews status reports prepared by project personnel and modifies schedules or plans as required.
  • Reviews design for compliance with surveying principles, firm standards, client requirements, and related specifications.
  • Prepares project reports and budget tracking for management, client, or others.
  • Confers with project personnel to provide technical advice and to resolve problems.
  • Coordinates project activities with activities of government regulatory or other governmental agencies.
  • Maintains neat & orderly work area allowing access to project information to other team members.
  • Provide an accurate accounting of time spent on projects with descriptions for each time entry on a weekly basis.
  • Provide guidance & development to all associates through timely performance reviews & informal feedback & coaching.
  • Participates in the screening and hiring of staff within the group.
  • Prepares or approves budget for group within assigned area of responsibility.
  • Observe driving regulations and proper diving etiquette.

Physical Capacity Requirements:
Sitting, standing, walking, lifting up to 25 lbs., talking, hearing, finger dexterity and/or feeling, near vision, far vision. Must be able to walk long distances on uneven terrain. Must be able to travel, at times long distances, by car or truck.
Environmental Conditions:
Primary work environment will be in an office, with secondary work environment being client offices, project sites, and municipal public hearings at evening meetings. Terrain may be level or highly challenging.
