Post:Specialty Doctor in Palliative Medicine

Responsible to:Medical Director and Consultant in Palliative Medicine

Introduction

This exciting opportunity is for a Specialty Doctor in Palliative Medicine to join an established team of medical practitioners at the Prince of Wales Hospice, Pontefract. The post is full time but part time applicants will happily be considered. There is an on call commitment which is non-resident on a 1:5 basis.

Background

The Prince of Wales Hospice is located in Pontefract in West Yorkshireand serves a population of around 188,000 people. We have a 13 bedded in-patient unit which has recently been refurbished to the highest standards and we provide day therapy services, outreach clinics and bereavement and family care support. We also successfully deliver the only specialist Lymphoedema service in the district.

The Hospice is largely an independent hospice with the majority of funding provided by the local community. Twenty seven percent of funding is from the Wakefield CCG.

The Hospice has close working relationship with the CCG, Hospital and Community Palliative Care teams who work as part of Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust. Our Consultants work alongside hospice, community and hospital teams.

We work collaboratively with Wakefield CCG, Wakefield Hospice and other partners to plan a strategic outline case to support delivery of care across the network.

The Hospice and Clinical Care Team work strategically in partnership with other local providers to provide the highest quality care. The hospice is forward thinking in terms of governance and demonstrating high quality care for our patients. Across the network the introduction of an electronic palliative care co-ordination system has improved patient experience.

The Hospice has a close relationship with chronic pain services and on site interventional analgesia is readily provided. There are also close links with non-malignant disease specialties such as respiratory disease and cardiac services. The Hospice has close links with the University of Leeds and provides educational placements for undergraduate training and theHospice also supports local GPs to attain the Teeside diploma module in palliative medicine. GP Trainees rotate through the Hospice as part of their training scheme.

The Hospice medical team have weekly education sessions which include audit presentation and journal reviews. The hospice actively supports and encourages CPD.

Medical Staffing

The current Medical team consists of:

  • Medical Director - Dr Hazel Pearse (Consultant in hospice and hospital palliative medicine)
  • Consultant in Palliative Medicine – Dr Lucy Walker
  • Hospice Practitioners – Dr Jacinta Walsh, Dr Bhajneek Grewal and Dr Josie Bates.
  • GP Registrar – 6 month rotational post.

The Hospice has a full multidisciplinary team including rehabilitation services, OT, Physiotherapy, chaplaincy, art therapy, social work, family support and bereavement teams.

Roles and responsibilities

  • To provide medical care across all clinical service areas as required;
  • To clerk patients on admission to the in- patient unit;
  • To assist with the daily management of patients on the inpatient unit;
  • To provide out-patient input for patients attending day therapy services;
  • To help ensure medical records are accurate and up to date including electronic records;
  • To participate in managerial activities including organizing on call rotas;
  • To participate in weekly education sessions which include all aspects of governance, including audit, clinical guidelines and journal reviews;
  • To be involved in the provision of 1 in 5 first on call (non- resident) under consultant supervision; and
  • To undertake appropriate continuing professional development and revalidation activities in accordance with the GMC guidance and Royal college of Physicians. The post holder will be expected to complete an annual appraisal.

Managerial responsibilities

The post holder will support the Medical Director with managerial responsibilities and help with on call rotas.

Education

  • The Hospice actively supports professional development;
  • The Medical team hold weekly educational meetings which include journal reviews, audit presentation and review of clinical guidelines;
  • The post holder will be encouraged to participate in external CPD activity including attending regional palliative medicine learning groups;
  • Individual teaching support can be provided as required;
  • The post holder will support the delivery of education; and
  • The Hospice supports medical student teaching and also GP registrar placements on six monthly placements.

Governance

The post holder will be encouraged to take part in all aspects of clinical governance. They will take part in audit and journal reviews. They will take part in bi-monthly clinical governance meetings with the wider clinical team.
