Call to Worship: “In the Beauty of Holiness”

In the beauty of holiness we see You Son of righteousness

So we bring all that we possess to lay at Your feet

In the place where Your glory shines, Jesus lover of all mankind

You have drawn us with love divine to make us complete

So I pause at Your gates once more, as my heart and my spirit soar

And I wish I could love You more, my God and my King

Is there tribute that I could bring, was there ever a song to sing

That could ever express my King, the work that You've done

Could I ever conceive of this, all the depths and the heights and breadth

Of the riches I now possess because of Your love

Opening Song: “Worthy of My Praise”

I will worship (I will worship), with all of my heart (with all of my heart)

I will praise You (I will praise You), with all of my strength (all my strength)

I will seek You (I will seek You) all of my days (all of my days)

I will follow (I will follow) all of Your ways (all Your ways)

I will give You all my worship, I will give You all my praise

You alone I long to worship, You alone are worthy of my praise

I will bow down (I will bow down) and hail You as King (and hail You as King)

I will serve You (I will serve You), give You everything (everything)

I will lift up (I will lift up) my eyes to Your throne (my eyes to Your throne)

I will trust You (I will trust You), trust You alone (You alone)

Scripture Lessons

The Bible is at the heart of our worship, because in it we read and understand the very words of God. Every word in the Bible has come from God and is vitally important so that we can know His heart and His truth. Each week during our service, we read a section of the Old Testament, a Psalm, a section from the New Testament, and a reading from the Gospels. If you do not have your own Bible, we would like to give you one as a free gift – please speak to a clergy member or an usher.

Old Testament Lesson: Genesis 22:1-14

Some time later, God tested Abraham’s faith. “Abraham!” God called. “Yes,” he replied. “Here I am.” 2“Take your son, your only son—yes, Isaac, whom you love so much—and go to the land of Moriah. Go and sacrifice him as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.” 3The next morning Abraham got up early. He saddled his donkey and took two of his servants with him, along with his son, Isaac. Then he chopped wood for a fire for a burnt offering and set out for the place God had told him about.4On the third day of their journey, Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.5“Stay here with the donkey,” Abraham told the servants. “The boy and I will travel a little farther. We will worship there, and then we will come right back.” 6So Abraham placed the wood for the burnt offering on Isaac’s shoulders, while he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them walked on together,7Isaac turned to Abraham and said, “Father?” “Yes, my son?” Abraham replied. “We have the fire and the wood,” the boy said, “but where is the sheep for the burnt offering?” 8“God will provide a sheep for the burnt offering, my son,” Abraham answered. And they both walked on together. 9When they arrived at the place where God had told him to go, Abraham built an altar and arranged the wood on it. Then he tied his son, Isaac, and laid him on the altar on top of the wood.10And Abraham picked up the knife to kill his son as a sacrifice.11At that moment the angel of theLordcalled to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Yes,” Abraham replied. “Here I am!” 12“Don’t lay a hand on the boy!” the angel said. “Do not hurt him in any way, for now I know that you truly fear God. You have not withheld from me even your son, your only son.” 13Then Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. So he took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering in place of his son.14Abraham named the place Yahweh-Yireh (which means “theLordwill provide”). To this day, people still use that name as a proverb: “On the mountain of theLordit will be provided.” The Word of the Lord.

People Thanks be to God

Psalm: 16:5-11

5 Lord, you alone are my inheritance, my cup of blessing. You guard all that is mine.
6 The land you have given me is a pleasant land. What a wonderful inheritance!

7 I will bless theLordwho guides me; even at night my heart instructs me.
8 I know theLordis always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.

9 No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice. My body rests in safety.
10 For you will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your holy oneto rot in the grave.
11 You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence

and the pleasures of living with you forever

Epistle Lesson: Romans 8:31-39

31What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us?32Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else?33Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself.34Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us. 35Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death?36(As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”)37No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. 38And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.39No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. The Word of the Lord.

People Thanks be to God

Gospel Hymn: “For I Am Convinced”

For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities

Nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing

Shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Mark.

People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Gospel: Mark 8:31-38

31Then Jesus began to tell them that the Son of Manmust suffer many terrible things and be rejected by the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but three days later he would rise from the dead.32As he talked about this openly with his disciples, Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things.33Jesus turned around and looked at his disciples, then reprimanded Peter.“Get away from me, Satan!”he said.“You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.” 34Then, calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said,“If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me.35If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will save it.36And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?37Is anything worth more than your soul?38If anyone is ashamed of me and my message in these adulterous and sinful days, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” The Gospel of the Lord.

People Praise to You, Lord Christ.

Gospel Hymn Continued: “For I Am Convinced”

For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities

Nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing

Shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord

The Sermon

Nicene Creed

Let us confess our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed:

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, visible and invisible.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People

This is a time for group prayer as well as personal prayers. Please prayerfully respond to the leader with the words in bold type. And please add your own prayers of thanksgiving and intercession either silently or aloud when invited to do so.

The Prayers of the People

Let us pray for the whole state of Christ’s Church and the world. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Help us to fulfill your great commission; making disciples of all nations; teaching them to obey all that you have commanded. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Give grace, heavenly Father, to all Bishops, Priests, and Deacons, and especially to Foley Beach, our Archbishop; Keith Andrews, our Bishop; Fr. Brian and Fr. Don, our Priests; and Dee Renner and Rosalind Marver, our Deacons, that by their life and teaching, they may proclaim your true and life-giving Word, and rightly administer your holy Sacraments. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We ask you to rule the hearts of all who govern us. May they administer justice, govern wisely, and strive for the welfare and peace of the whole world. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We humbly ask you, gracious Lord, to comfort and strengthen all those who, in this earthly life are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

I invite you to add your own thanksgivings or requests at this time. We bless your holy Name for all your servants who departed this life in your faith and fear, praying you would grant us grace to follow their good examples, that with them we might partake in your heavenly kingdom. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
