Prior to joining the Santa Monica College staff, Dr. Boyd served as an academiccounselor for three years at St. Mary’s Academy High School. Shortly after, she transitioned to a start-up charter school called Animo Jackie Robinson Charter High School, located in South Los Angeles where she created and developed an Academic and College Counseling Program. Here, Dr. Boyd served as the school academic and college counselor for nine years before crossing over to the Community College arena. During this time, she also served as Animo Jackie Robinson’s Athletic Director for four years as well as the District Athletic Director for two. In addition to her high school work, Dr. Boyd also currently works as a College Counseling Consultant for an online counseling consulting company called UCEazy.

Dr. Boyd takes pride in the positive relationships that she has been able to develop with students in order to assist them with realizing and achieving their goals and aspirations. During her high school tenure, she was able to guide students through the college application process and help earn students admission into some of the country’s top universities.

Currently, Dr. Boyd serves as a Counselor in SMC’s Athletics and Black Collegians Program. She began her college athletic experience at Fresno State University, where she was a full scholarship player for the Fresno State Women’s Basketball Team. After receiving her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Liberal Studies, Dr. Boyd then received her Master of Science Degree in Educational Counseling from National University. In 2014, Dr. Boyd earned her Doctorate Degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies with an emphasis in Community College. Dr. Boyd’s research in African American Male Division-I athletes and academic success was accepted for the 2014 American Educational Research Association Conference and has enhanced her passion for service to student-athletes, specifically at the college level. Dr. Boyd hopes to continue research regarding student-athletes and academic success while working with SMC’s counseling department.
