Senior Project

A senior may choose to do a senior project the last few weeks of the year as an alternative to completing their high school careers in a traditional fashion.
Student Requirements For Those Participating In A
Senior Project:
1. A Senior Project Proposal Form, signed by your off-site supervisor and a parent or guardian, must be turned in to Ms. Hager by April 3, 2012.
- A typed preliminary research paper about your
community service project or the career that you will be
shadowing must be turned in to Ms. Hager no later
than April 19, 2012.
3. Completion of 50 or more hours of shadowing or community
service from May 7- 25.
4. Keep a log of shadowing or community service hours during the three-week period to be signed daily by your off-site supervisor. Log sheet must be turned in by May 29, 2012.
5. To complete the project experience, give a 3-5 minute oral presentation about your senior project. Presentations will be given on Tuesday evening, May 29, 2012, at the
high school. Presentation must include some form of visual
aid (power point, DVD, chart, pictures, etc.).
Appropriate dress is required.

Benefits of doing a Senior Project:
Each senior who does a senior project:
1. Will not have to attend regular classes the last three weeks of the school year.
2. Will not have to take any May final exams.
3. Will receive a Senior Project completion certificate, which they can insert into their portfolios.
The Faculty Advisor:
1. Helps direct and guide the student through the senior project process.
2. Evaluates all written requirements on a 1 to 5 rubric scale.
3. Make at least two phone calls to the off-site supervisor.
4. Attends the final presentation on Tuesday, May 29, 2012.
General Rules for the Senior Project:
1. The experience must take place at a site other than Garfield Heights High School, since one of the goals of the senior project is to expose the student to a setting away from school.
2. The off-site supervisor of the senior’s shadowing or community service must not be a parent, guardian or Garfield Heights High School staff member, so that the student has the opportunity to work with an outside adult supervisor.
3. The project is to be done individually, not as a group project with another student.

4. Final exam grades on the grade card will be the grade from the January exam
for full-year courses.
5. Second semester courses will not have an exam grade for senior project participants and their final course grade will be determined strictly from
third and fourth quarter grades truncated as of the middle of May.
6. To participate in a senior project, the senior must be passing all of his/her courses and be on target to graduate by the first deadline date, April 3, 2012. Eligibility will be determined once project proposal forms
are submitted.
7. *Note, You may NOT shadow at your place of employment.
8. Seniors who attend CVCC and are interested in participating in the Senior Project, must still attend CVCC during the May 7 – 25 shadowing
experience. CVCC will NOT excuse you from attending and participating
in your CVCC classes. If you have any questions, please see Ms. Hager.
9. Deadlines will be adhered to, with no exceptions. To avoid missing a deadline and being excluded from the senior project option for graduation,
don’t wait until the last minute, turn things in early.
