Information for Parents

Course: CP Chemistry

Instructor: Mr. Cahill Room: 179

Email:

Web address: oxfordchemistry1.wikispaces.com

Textbook: At this time there is no online text book. Students were instructed to take the chemistry book home and leave it there. Books will be issued Wednesday or Thursday.

Homework: There is always chemistry homework even if it is to just review the notes given in class. Homework is typically given out of the text, but as the year progresses addition practice in the form of worksheets is available on the wiki. Homework is always checked on the next class day, that we are not doing a lab. Students earn 10 points for the attempt, and are expected to seek clarification for any problems that caused them difficulty. Half credit is given it the assignment is 1 day late, and after that it is expected that the student work the problems and seek guidance if necessary. School policy applies for illness. I enter Homework in Power school as I assign it so that you can check to see if there is homework on a daily basis.

Laboratories: Labs are completed in 3 parts and turned in together for grading. The “Prelab” consists of 5 parts that must be done prior to lab day, (25 points/80). The Doing of lab and collecting of data is the 2nd part, and the final part is the answering of the questions and completing any calculations for the lab. Details can be found on the Wiki under CP Syllabus. Lab reports are due on the 2nd class day after the lab is completed. Labs are typically entered into power school after 5 school days.

Tests: Will be given at the end of each chapter and will always be reported as a percentage, so that each chapter carried equal weight on the quarter grade. Students will always be given notice of upcoming tests.

Please update your contact information in power school and do not share your password with your student. I will endeavor to send email updates on prelab assignments and tests.

Grading: Tests, Quizzes and Labs are “Performance Assessments”; “Do now” assignments are “Formative Assessments”; and Homework is still Homework.

Calculator: Students will need a Scientific calculator, or one that will work as one. If the Math department recommended a graphing calculator, it will work for chemistry. Although the Ipad has a calculator, a back up plan is recommended.

Other office supplies: Notebook, folder, pens and pencils are open to the student preference as they will have to live with it.
