POSITION OF CONSTRUCTION PLANT FITTER
TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
The employment will be whole-time and terminable at the discretion of the Council or the employee, but subject to the provision of the Minimum Notice and Terms of Employment Acts, 1973 - 2001 and the Unfair Dismissals Act, 1977 - 2001. The appropriate terms of the Local Government (Superannuation) Consolidation Scheme 1998 will apply
In accordance with the Public Service Superannuation (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2004 the minimum age at which pensions may be paid to persons who become pensionable employees and are deemed “new entrants” in accordance with the Act, is 65 years.
1. CHARACTER
Each candidate must be of good character.
2. EDUCATION, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE, ETC:
Candidates shall on the latest date for receipt of completed application forms for the office:
(a) have a good standard of education
(b) have served a recognised apprenticeship, and hold a recognised certificate as a fitter/mechanic, in a Mechanical Engineering trade. The successful candidate may be required to undergo a practical test
(c) have experience in the maintenance of a broad range of engineering plant and equipment including diesel engine trucks, hydraulic and pneumatic systems etc.
(d) have a good working knowledge of auto-electrics including truck electrics, instrumentation etc.
(e) be proficient in welding techniques.
(f) be a competent driver and hold a current full Driving Licence, without endorsement preferably with a class “C”
(g) Hold a current Safe Pass Card
Each Candidate must furnish any relevant certificates as to his/her training or qualifications.
3. AGE/RETIREMENT
In general, there is no specific retirement age for appointees to this position. However, for appointees who are deemed not to be “new entrants” as defined in the Public Service Superannuation (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2004, retirement is compulsory on reaching 65 years of age.
4. HEALTH
Be free from any defect or disease, which would render him/her unsuitable to hold the
employment and be in state of health such as, would indicate a reasonable prospect of
ability to render regular and efficient service.
For the purposes of satisfying the requirements as to health it will be necessary for each successful candidate, before he/she is appointed, to undergo at his/her expense a medical examination by a qualified medical practitioner who will be nominated by Kilkenny County Council. Employment will be subject to a satisfactory medical report. On taking up appointment, the expense of the medical examination will be refunded to the candidate.
5. PROBATION
The employment will be subject to a probationary period of 12 months from date of commencement of employment. Such probationary period may be extended at the Manager’s discretion. Such person shall cease to hold such office at the end of a period of probation unless during such period the Manager has certified that the service of such person in such office is satisfactory
6. WAGES
Remuneration will be at the national rate payable. The present scale is:
€688.95 to 729.78 (after 7.5 years)
7. HOURS OF DUTY
There shall be a 39-hour working week and the working week will be from Monday to Friday both days inclusive and in addition the Construction Plant Fitter shall be available for overtime duties outside these hours as and when required. Overtime payment at the normal rate shall be made in such cases. The Council reserves the right to alter the working week as and when required.
8. DUTIES
· The person employed will be required to carry out all the duties allotted to him/her by the
Machinery Yard Engineer, Technical Services Supervisor, Machinery Foreman and other supervisory staff, relative to the repair and maintenance of the equipment and premises and any other such duties.
· He/she will be required to work in any of the premises used by Kilkenny County Council, including any other premises that may be acquired in the future.
· Initial deployment shall be to the Machinery Yard, Hebron Industrial Estate, Kilkenny but the Council may, at its absolute discretion, assign the successful applicant to such work base as may be required from time to time.
· He/she will keep and furnish such records and reports relating to his/her duties as directed by staff. He/she will operate such systems (including information technology) as are necessary to achieve maximum efficiency in the position.
· He/she may be required to drive a van in the course of his/her duties
· The post-holder will comply with requirements of Kilkenny County Council’s Corporate Safety Statement and the Machinery Yard Safety Statement, legislation/regulations as may be in force from time to time, including any such policies introduced by Kilkenny County Council
· New employees will be expected to perform duties in accordance with established work practices of the County Council including those incorporated in agreement with the County Council and staff unions.
· The post-holder will operate any machinery, appliances, equipment and associated items as required including operating existing technology and any new technology that may be introduced in the future and be responsible for such items under his/her control.
· Other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
· The person employed will be required to supply his/her own set of maintenance tools.
9. TRAINING:
The postholder will undertake any course of relevant training as required by the Kilkenny County Council
10. INTERVIEWS:
Interviews will be held and a panel will be created. The Council will not be responsible for any expenses incurred by candidates in attending for interview.
