Relief Printmaking

Objectives:
·  Define what printmaking is as a form of art.
·  Identify relief printing as a type of printmaking
·  Follow safety techniques while cutting linoleum block.
·  Create a design for a relief print and follow through with the printing process to make an edition of 4 prints.
·  Four of the prints created fall into the following categories:
§  Black ink on white paper
§  Color (plain color or rainbow print)
§  Printed on colored paper or cloth
§  Black on white paper touched up with color using colored pencils, oil pastels, or watercolors.
·  Title, sign, and take part in a print exchange with classmates.
Procedures/Activities:
Day 1:
·  Today students will be introduced to what a relief print is. They will begin with a review of the concept of printmaking as an art form.
·  Sw view a power point showing various examples of relief prints created using linoleum. A couple of short videos will also be included in the presentation along with vocabulary words given.
·  Next students will begin brainstorming/sketching ideas on a provided worksheet.
Day 2:
·  Continue to work on sketches for entire class. Choose best two to make into more graphic sketches by tracing over pencil lines (or positive space) and coloring in areas with thick sharpie markers. This will help students visualize what their prints will look like.
·  Review printmaking vocabulary.
Day 3:
·  Demonstrate transferring design onto 4x6” piece of linoleum.
·  Demonstrate cutting with linoleum cutting tools.
·  Review vocabulary—printmaking vocab quiz next class.
Day 4:
·  Printmaking vocabulary quiz.
·  Continue cutting with linocut tools and safety mitts.
Day 5:
·  Demonstrate printing and explain printing requirements. They can do a max of 8? prints. But each student must print on one of each of the following for at least four of their prints:
§  Black ink on white paper
§  Color (plain color or rainbow print)
§  Printed on colored paper or cloth
§  Black on white paper touched up with color using colored pencils, oil pastels, or watercolors.

·  Powerpoint on relief cutting with linoleum
·  Video examples
·  Worksheet for sketches
·  Transfer paper
·  One 4x6” block of linoleum/student
·  Cutting tools with extra blades
·  Safety mitts
·  Printing ink
·  Brayers
·  Plexiglas
·  White paper
·  Colored paper
·  Cloth
·  Oil pastels
·  Crayons
·  Watercolors / Vocabulary:
§  Printmaking:A process in which an artist repeatedly transfers an original image from one prepared surface to another.
§  Relief printing:a form of printmaking in which only the raised areas of the block are printed.
§  Plate:the surface on which the image is prepared. It can be wood, stone, linoleum or a variety of other materials including cardboard.
§  Safety Kut:a type of linoleum, which can be used on both sides.
§  Gouge: the tool used for carving away the negative shape in your design. It comes with a variety of different blades.
§  Brayer:the rolling device used to spread ink onto the plate and then onto the block.
§  Baren:a circular tool used to transfer ink onto paper by friction.
§  Edition:the total number of identical prints (copies) made from one image.
Assessment:
·  Completion of 4 sketches with two drawn over in sharpie to see how they will look as a print
·  Successful transfer of design onto linoleum
·  Following safety procedures for cutting design into linoleum
·  Four different types of prints completed and turned in:
§  Black ink on white paper
§  Color (plain color or rainbow print)
§  Printed on colored paper or cloth
§  Black on white paper touched up with color using colored pencils, oil pastels, or watercolors. / Adaptations:
·  For students unable to use cutting tools on linoleum they will use a foam printing plate and press their lines into it to create a print
·  Two or three of the required prints vs. four
