REFLECTION PAPER # 21

Reflection Paper # 2

Considerprofessional settings you have known. Which of the theoretical perspectives in this module are most pertinent to motivating followers and maintaining satisfaction?

How do you inspire your staff to achieve extraordinary results? As I read the commentary assignment I couldn’t help but reflect back on my previous career at AT&T. The leadership team had a deep understanding of the needs of their staff and how best to meet the expectations of their staff. As Burns identified,” leaders should make leaders out of others by helping them become everything they are capable of becoming”. It is for this reason that I chose Maslow’s notion of self-actualization as my model.

Physical wellbeing- provided by the security of your job

Safety and security- job situation frees you up to provide for physical well being

Social affiliation- belonging to a group with shared beliefs and values

Self-esteem- the recognition and praise you receive by belonging to a committed group

Self-actualization - obtained through growth and development

During my career at AT&T I felt part of a larger family. It was a caring environment focusing not only on the needs of the corporation but also the individual. Leadership was a constant presence in the building and on at least one occasion each week did a walk through and took the opportunity to meet with staff and identifying them by name. It was not uncommon to have a skip level meeting with upper management to ensure communication and feedback on concerns. Educational opportunities were encouraged and discussed so everyone was aware of resources available for them to succeed. If needs were identified they were pursued by leadership and follow up occurred and discussed openly at the next skip level meeting.

Monthly organization meeting were held outside of the work environment and staff involvement was the expectation.

Successes and failures were discussed and celebrated. During these gathering there was an empowerment of staff to share their ideas that were consistent with the vision of the organization.

This was an organization where there was a constant show of positive attitude with respect for all parties. An organization that made you want to go above and beyond your capabilities. Staff was recognized for their accomplishments through celebration and rewards.
