Getting Off To the Right Start with Satellite Internet: Top Ten Tips
If you asked the average American about satellite Internet 10 years ago, you’d likely get a blank stare. Early generation services were directed to a small segment of subscribers, especially those in rural areas, who had no other options – except for dial-up, with its excruciatingly slow speeds.
Times – and technology – have changed in a big way.
With ViaSat’s launch of the world’s most powerful communication satellite in 2011, and dramatic improvements in ground technology, Exede satellite Internet now reaches all or parts of all 50 states, remote areas and rural areas included. Its speeds, up to 12 Mbps, are twice as fast as average DSL.
What used to be an option for hundreds of customers is now a reality for hundreds of thousands of subscribers. With two years of experience behind us, and great feedback from our subscribers, we’ve put together our top 10 tips for a successful satellite Internet experience.
1. Exede Internet is most likely available where you live. So check it out. Beams from our satellites cover wide swaths of the country, remote and rural areas included. In fact, we cover about 80 percent of the U.S. population. Check exede.com to confirm that Exede Internet is available where you live.
2. Select the right plan. Satellite Internet works differently than cable modem, DSL and wireless Internet. Most plans provide a monthly data allowance based on the amount of data you use. ViaSat also offers an innovative new plan, called Exede Evolution. This plan includes unlimited email and web pages for essential activities, including communication, research, homework, online shopping, banking, and many types of social media – plus an allowance for video streaming and downloads. So think carefully about your family’s needs and sign up for the plan that’s right for you.
3. Bundle for greater savings. Add Exede home telephone service to any plan, which includes unlimited long distance calling across the U.S. and Canada, for an additional $19.99. Or choose our triple play service, which includes DIRECTV, with plans that begin at $99.99.
4. Contact us – or your local dealer. Once you’ve made a decision on the plan or bundle that’s right for you, it’s time to contact us directly – or reach out to a dealer in your area.
5. Check the specs on your compute and router and upgrade if necessary. Outdated routers can slow speeds and disrupt service. To ensure all areas of your home can receive service, we recommend at least a mid-range wireless router. Your computer should be new enough to run modern browsers such as Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Internet Explorer.
6. Check your zoning ordinances and neighborhood covenants regarding satellite dishes. The Exede service requires a mini-dish (30 inches by 28 inches) and is under the same classification as other residential satellite dishes (such as satellite television) and legally permissible for mounting on your home under the FCC “Over-the-Air Reception Devices Rule.” However, HOA covenants vary so please check with your association for their specific rules and covenants.
7. Locate best spot for the dish and the cable. Our satellite dishes can be mounted on the roof or on an outside wall of your home — or even on a pole. Find a location with a clear view of the southern sky, taking future landscaping plans and tree growth into account.
8. Schedule the installation. As part of the subscription process, a certified professional installer will quickly and efficiently install equipment and activate the Exede internet service. A typical installation takes 2-3 hours.
9. Take advantage of our value-added, free services. All of our plans include a late night/early morning five hour Free Zone, which provides unlimited, high-speed service that doesn’t count against your data allowance. Plus, 12 months of anti-virus software protection is included.
