GOVERNMENT INVESTMENT IN ENGINEERING
Proposer: Bill Olner (Lab, Nuneaton)
Date tabled: Wednesday 31 January, 2008
Number of MPs signing: 22
That this House welcomes the announcement by the Department for Children, Schools and Families of a £140 million strategy to boost science and mathematics teaching in schools to nurture the education of the next generation of scientists and mathematicians; believes that this measure would make a significant impact upon the number of people pursuing a career in these fields, which are vital to the growth of the UK economy; and also notes the work of the Royal Academy of Engineering, which has campaigned to establish hands-on science, technology, engineering and mathematics activities in schools and which strives to raise awareness of engineering and technology as stimulating career options.

DEFENCE TRAINING REVIEW (No. 2)
That this House warmly welcomes the announcement by the Ministry of Defence to proceed with Package One of the Defence Training Review (DTR), which will modernise and transform the Phase 2 and Phase 3 training provision of the armed forces by providing state of the art teaching methods and technologies in aeronautical, mechanical and electrical engineering, communications and information systems for all three services on one site at MOD St Athan in the Vale of Glamorgan; believes this will build on the highly successful model of the Tri Service Officer Defence Academy at Shrivenham by providing young service men and women with the most advanced training in the world in a modern environment on a purpose built site, reaffirming the belief that all our service personnel, irrespective of rank, deserve the best training available; further believes this knowledge based investment has the potential to significantly transform the South Wales economy; and remains confident that St Athan will remain well placed to attract a substantial part of Package Two of the DTR covering logistics, personnel, policing, security, language, intelligence and photography training which will, as with Package One, deliver excellence and value for money for the taxpayer.

PROTECTION OF VILLAGE SCHOOLS
Proposer: Nigel Evans (Con, Ribble Valley)
Date tabled: Wednesday 29 January, 2008
Number of MPs signing: 25
That this House recognises the importance of village schools to their communities; notes that plans to close village schools across the UK represent yet another example of the systematic dismantling of the rural way of life; and calls on the Government to honour its pledge made in 1998 for the protection of village schools and to provide local authorities with the requisite support.

CHILD EXECUTIONS
Proposer: Alistair Carmichael (LDP, Orkney and Shetland)
Date tabled: Friday 25 January, 2008
Number of MPs signing: 46
That this House notes that Amnesty International continues to record instances of child offenders being executed worldwide; observes that Amnesty International recorded that a total of 18 child offenders have been executed in Iran since 2004, more than any other state during that period; recognises that this practice is contrary to Article 37(a) of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child; further notes that this practice is contrary to the United Nations General Assembly resolution vote calling for a moratorium on the use of the death penalty passed on 18th December 2007; and calls upon the Government to take every action possible to ensure that there are no further child executions worldwide in 2008 or thereafter.
