Eco-tourism project

Project background

The project is the next step of the Ecotourism in and around National Parks in Vietnamfor which community based tourism (CBT) models have been established in Ta Lai and Dak Lua communes in the bufferzone of Cat Tien National Park (2008-2011). In the 2nd phase, the main outcomes from the 1st phase will be consolidated. The existing CBT models will receive more support and be monitored carefully. A new CBT model, which strongly involves local CSOs such as Women Union and Youth union, will be developed in the buffer zone of Bidoup – Nui Ba National Park (BNBNP). Advocating for better government frameworks for the development of ecotourism in and around protected areas of Vietnam, and for responsible tourism will be continued. The CBT models in CTNP and BNBNP will serve as showcases and provide lessons learned for the improvement of the government framework at central level. At national level, strong involvement of civil society organizations (CSOs), such as Ecotourism Association and Association of National Parks and Protected areas will be seeked, in influencing the government framework on ecotourism investment and responsible tourism.

Objective

The project aims to finalize and get endorsed both guidelines of community based tourism in buffer zones of protected areas and investment on ecotourism, and responsible tourism standards/certification scheme. The project also targets to get commitment from the private sector in tourism industry towards those guidelines..

Interventions

  • The existing CBT models will receive support and their impacts on both local livelihood and park’s environment be monitored carefully.
  • A new CBT model, which strongly involves local CSOs such as Women Union and Youth union, will be developed in the buffer zone of Bidoup – Nui Ba National Park (BNBNP).
  • Community based Eco-tourism guidelines developedand tested in Bidoup- Nui Ba NP..
  • Guidelines for private sector investments in Protected Areas in Vietnam aretested
  • A Responsible Tourism Certification Scheme for Vietnam is developed and tested.

Expected ouputs

  • Guidelines and regulations for community based ecotourism are endorsed by the Vietnamese government.
  • Guidelines and regulations for investment on ecotourism in protected areas in Vietnam are endorsed by the Vietnamese Government.
  • Private sector (tourism) commits to comply with the guidelines and regulations for responsible tourism and ecotourism investment in protected areas.
