Minutes of the Meeting
August 19, 2010
- The meeting was called to order at 6:30, Larry Hines presiding. Present: S. Hines, L. Hood, J. Welch, S. Lindsay, V. Frisina, J. Harris, C. Bakis, V. Thompson, J. Davis, and R. Belcher.
- The Hickory Grove police report was tabled.
- New business—Black Tie Gala. Vickie Fewell has sent letters of invitation to U. S. Congressional representatives, NC Legislature members, and City and County elected officials. Sponsors are needed for the Black Tie Gala on Saturday, October 16.
- Discussions:
- Vincent Frisina reported on 2 trailers and a retaining pond at Kip Academy and the August 23 vote on bonds for subsidized housing. The public can speak at the session. For more information about attending, people can call him at 704-568-4110.
- There was a public meeting on August 16 on the location policy for public housing.
- The Taste of the World will be held on Thursday, October 7.
- Veronica Thompson reported the need for new members. Chris Bakis suggested moving the general meeting to a weekend afternoon. There was also a suggestion of getting a program on public access TV.
- Eastland Area Strategies Team (EAST)—Jeanie Welch reported on the last EAST meeting which included 2 presentations on Eastland Mall, including its history and revisioning concepts. Eastland is situated near two greenways on the Carolina Thread Trail and could become part of the Trail. EAST is also considering an “adopt an intersection” project along Central Avenue.
- Chris Bakis discussed the public hearing on the widening of Independence Blvd. and a meeting with the new head of CATS. The MTC 2030 plan on the transit corridors is being revised. Jerry Orr, head of Charlotte Douglas Airport, is promoting light rail from Matthews to the airport. Light rail is still possible along Independence. There is also a Citizens for Mass Transit group.
- The meeting was adjourned at 7:45 pm.
