1.0 Introduction

Restoration and hope for Refugee (REHORE) is an independent, Non-governmental, developmental and charity, Non-for profit Organization. Formed in July 2012 out of a desire to support, restore, empowering and building the capacity of refugees and nationalwomen and children affected by wars, sexual violence, sexual exploitation, victim survived of torture, human trafficking and deprived from Human rights.

REHORE Provides Training insewing and tailoring skills in Refugee settlements and urban areas where refugees don’t have access to training skills to enable them generating some income and become master of their own future. Refugeesdo not have sewing and tailoring skills and before getting it they have to be forced into sexual exploitation and that affect them with sickness and women are being raped because of looking where they can get this services.

1.1 Problem statement and Project rational

Many women are victims of different violence then after are rejected by their husband, families, societies and communities. They have no where to stay, nothing to eat and cannot access the basic needs. Refugee women are more and more vulnerable because of their status, some have been victims of human trafficking, immigrant, victim of war etc and then they reached here in Kampala, and they have no one to support or help them. As consequence they have been for many times victims of the unlawful arrest, sexual abuse, defilement, forced labor, forced prostitution, sexual exploitation, accused of many crimes in the city, unwanted pregnancies, discrimination by the whole community, sexual transmitted diseases.

Their fate is determined on the streets of Kampala day time and night where they are always called prostitutes; thieves at the end there are arrested, sentenced and sent to prison. We have noticed the problem of attitude of some people who have a negative perceptive of the Uganda systems and think refugees women are just for short term situation. They do not encourage the refugee women to access training skills, to go the school, to develop themselves. Many refugee women who are used in forced prostitution and other sexual practices most of them are due to the lack of support and the poor social lives in order to meet their basic needs and to pay the house rent. It has been seen that when a refugee women want to integrate to the Uganda systems she is put in a lower level because of lack of skills, English language barrier for those who come from countries where English is not spoken, and end up being victims of different crimes such as sexual exploitations of refugee women, young girls and forced prostitution and drogue abuse.

It is difficult to refugees’access sewing and tailoring skills in Refugee Urban areas even in settlements and before you get itwomen have been asked to exchange with sexual practices including forced sexual exploitation. Other Refugee get sewing training from a long walked distance which is not good to their learning condition, they end up being raped. Failure to access sewing and tailoring training skills, lead to forced prostitution etc…. and this can lead to be affected and infected with HIV/AIDS, other sexual transmitted diseaseswhich leads to death.By August 2012, Uganda had become an emergency, with more than 40,000 Congolese seeking safety in Uganda. They joined other new arrivals, notably from South Sudan, Somalia, Burundi, Rwanda, Ethiopia and Eritrea. By August 2012 Uganda was host to more than 190,000 registered refugees and asylum-seekers.In the past five years, Uganda has seen a fivefold increase in the number of refugees living in urban areas - from 9,000 in 2007 to 48,000 today. Most live in Kampala. Majority of these refugees especially women and young girls have been victim of many sexual violence, forced prostitution and drug abuse due to luck of skills to generate an income.

Therefore the situation will be improved with implementation of our project which focuses on training in sewing and tailoring skills.

6.0 Sustainability measures

Socio cultural & economic sustainability
The behavioral and attitudinal changes brought in by the project among the Refugees and local communities particularly the girls and women will empower them to actively participate in decision making in all other future activities. Women and girls will come together in a common platform to discuss their socio cultural problem bringing changes in age old social habits. The project will significantly affect the lives of these refugee women after completing the sewing and tailoring training and of the young girls who got the opportunity to be an instructor at the Centre. We will look at how these skills can be converted into income generation activities, livelihood security and self employability. This would bring about the much needed confidence among them helping them move forward towards development. Their active participation in the decision making process, community based planning and being an instructor will bring about ownership of the project.
REHORE will continue to play an active role to facilitate the young and energetic girls and women to establish a strong link with government schemes and projects so as to generate the required assistance. Internal income will be generated in the form of enrolment, contribution from Rehore members anddonations. This project will motivate the unemployed girls and women to start micro enterprises at local level.
